WINE, a compatibility layer (not emulator) for Linux is very popular for running simple programs. Since Mac OS X is based on a similar architecture (and can run UNIX/Linux programs via FINK), I found a port of WINE for Darwin, the base of OS X. It's called Darwine .

Also, if you want to run the Windows version of SimCity 4 on Mac OS X, like I'm going to do on Linux once my CD drive starts to mount again, is use Cedega . On top of the standard WINE installation, it includes support for a few more Win32 calls and DirectX/Direct3D. There are constant updates to it, and the shortest possible subscription ($5US/month) is 3 months.

edit: In your case, you may just want to extract the files from them. Using unzip, or any other program with *.zip support, will most likely work for that. If not, use CabExtract .

WINE does not emulate CPUs. While PCs use X86 processors, WINE can only be used on X86-linux systems to run any Windows software.

Darwine does not emulate the X86 CPU yet. It can only be used on Mac OS X to run PPC-binaries of Windows-applications on OSX. In the past, Windows NT 4.0 was ported to the PPC platform but supported a very short time. There were only a few applications ported to NT (PPC). These can be run through Darwine.

There were plans to extend Darwine with a X86-emulator but I think that won't happen because Apple switches to Intel now.

Most of the .exe stuff on the STEX comes from the BSC. There's a MSC MAC Archive thread where MAC-friendly formats are posted (I've personally been a bit slack and need to upload some of my lots).

.EXE files which are just winzip Auto-extractors can be extracted using stuffit expander and are handled like zip-files.

That's true, but the installer package that BSC uses aren't just winzip auto extractors, and stuffit doesn't work to run the installer, or just extract the files.

Isn't there an useful installer what extracts the files from a zipfile and copies them to the right place instead of one which archives the contents to be installed?

Edited for flamability. This is ridiculously frustrating. Has anyone considered a Mac only sim city website to compile of of this info into one place? Such as this forum?

Anyone interested in starting something like this, PM me. I have all the hosting we would need, I wouldn't have all of the time needed to run it though.

I agree with the moderator who edited your post, this site has already everything you need e.g a mac dedicated forum which is costing a lot of bandwidth.

Considering it took 2 days for anyone to even notice the post. 2.gif

I wasn't implying this isn't a nice site and all, I really meant no disrespect, but the lack of straight info on the mac side is frustrating.

Why can't the BAT teams just include .hqx files or .dmg files with their packages? It isn't all that hard, just get VISE installer and you'll do fine.

Zip is a built in function of OSX, so that would be fine really. Rather than them needing to create 2 installers.

Actually can you even create a mac installer with a PC?

Being able to run the .exe on your Mac using an expensive x86 emulator still wouldn't do much good, since it installs files to Windows-specific pathnames. When the installer tries to put a file at C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins, first of all Mac/Unix doesn't have a C: drive, doesn't use backslash as a path separator, and certainly doesn't store user information in any place called Documents and Settings. That is all Windows-specific stuff.

Secondly, running an emulator like VirtualPC takes up so much memory and time to boot up just to extract maybe one tiny file from what ought to be a simple ZIP in the first place.

I can understand the frustration. And it is needless. I don't use Macs, I'm a Windows user, but I certainly don't need an exe to install a simple file into my Documents folder. I can do it myself with the ZIP format just as easily.

So this exe installer format is causing needless frustration for Mac users while at the same time does nothing for the Windows people except provide a minor annoyance and an opportunity to introduce more viruses into my computer. What's the point of it?

I used to use Macs a long time ago so that's where I have some sensitivity to Mac concerns. Windows people that have no Mac experience just have no sensitivity or compassion and just don't care at all. I think that is wrong.

Actually I don't know any other program but Virtual-PC for Mac which can handle .exe-files. Virtual-PC lets you install Windows on an Apple and you can run specific programms there (not all, because itself uses alot of memory and the original OSX runs also in the background). You may extract and install .exe files with Virtual-PC and copy them to your SC4 Mac-folders. But Virtual-PC is expensive and you also need a Windows XP version...

Downloading files from the BSC Mac Archiv (see former replies) may help. They provide most of the .exe files of STEX on a Mac friendly .zip folder for self-installing.

Uhmmm

Doesn't Virtual PC come with Windows XP Pro? Last time I checked, it did. It is extremely difficult to install XP on blank Virtual PC.

It's not that expensive. $279.99 US isn't that bad.
And as far as memory goes, most Mac users should have at least 1GB of RAM, if not 2.

Im not an expert on macs, though i do know a freind of mine Dualbooted Win98 and OSX on an IBooK(and did the same for me on mine, wich caught fire while surfing the web, but thats another story, we got to lend them from school for a year)

And as we all know, Win98 has no problem running .exe files. the advantge of this is that you get OSX out of the memory, and win98 uses far less reasorces than OSX, freeing up more for whatever application your running.

Otherwise it might be something to run a computer under Lindows or another Linux Operating system and running whine or whatever the app was called. Lindows(as far as i know) has built in support for windows programs ^^

Cheers

So close, can't extract the SC file formats, though the jpegs and read me files were extracted properly. It also extracted the .png files from the the .dat file (i.e., the menu icons and query window), but you don't actually want these extracted...

Appreciate the effort though, might contact the guy who makes it, see if he can add some formats.
