I'm currently building a city sort of like New York. Where theres the main island with all the super talls and a few mid rises and lots of avenus and roads and stuff. Really griddy and planned out. Then theres a mainland on each side of the island and theyre connected with bridges [all avenues] and one highway towards the back of the city. Well, I have no public transportation. I know how to do it and stuff, infact, one of my other cities I have like every public transit available. But in this one I thought I would see what happens when the entire population is forced to drive or walk.

Well its really not very pretty. I mean the city itself is pretty, but you can't really see parts of it because of orange-ish clouds like you get in the dirty industrial sectors. So I checked the air pollution and since its all cars the pollution is really bad. Like red all over the place on the map. And I just didnt know that smog would show up because of all the pollution from cars. Its kind of cool actually, cause it makes it more realistic and I'd never seen that before. Like the entire main island is covered in clouds of orange-ish smog.

Has that ever happened to anyone else?

That is interesting. No it's never happened to me. I figured everyone would pack up and leave before anything like that happened.

You'd think so, but what makes it even weirder is that most of the residential buildings on the island are Medium-High wealth.

There are a lot of schools, parks [a Central one, just like NYC], police/fire stations, and hospitals though. Plus Im using Super Demand Mod. But even then you think the buildings would become dilapidated and stuff, but no.

I know that each vehicle generates pollution in Sim City, even the mass transit vehicles. Since you are building a city without mass transit and cars are the only vehicles, you will probably get a lot of pollution, possibly as much pollution as a moderately sized dirty industry district. You will need to enact the Vehicle Emissions Reduction and Clean Air ordinances to start reducing the pollution.

I've seen tons of smog from my industrial cities, I loooove the dirty industries, screw Utopias. I've never seen smog form solely from cars though, your traffic must be terrible, can you post some screenshots of the smoggy areas? I would like to see that.

I thought my cities were polluted. lol. Cars are the biggest polluters (second only to dirty/manufactering industries). Mass transit bacisly sqeezes sims into fewer vehicles. So lets just say the cars and buses make the same amount of pollution and lets just say that 20 people can fit in the bus, if the bus is full it will be producing one twentieth the pollution the cars were making. So if you have no mass transit, more cars will be one the road polluting and fulling your highways past capacity. Or you could make your sims drive Preuses. 2.gif

I think the poster knows what the problem is(if you could call it a problem) we just didn't know that you could actually see smog in the game.

Smog is visible, of course. I've seen if before with my industrial and airports. Never in the city itself however, which is weird. Is he just talking about seeing the pollution in the map? Or is the game smog actually appearing downtown?

Unless I completely misread his post, he is not just talking about polution indicators on the map, but about actual smog animation within the city itself. According to the original post, he sees "orange-ish clouds like you get in the dirty industrial sectors." This leads me to believe he is seeing it someplace different such as downtown or in a residential neighbourhood. I have never seen smog in this game at any location so it's all new to me.

I get smog in most of my cities, even with mass transit purely because of how big they are..

I am seeing them downtown. Like in the central core of the city.

Theres a main intersection where two avenues meet that is surrounded by high rise

commercial complexes with thousands of jobs and it shows up around there.

Then theres a central corridor lined with towering apartments lining the central park where the smog

also shows up. Its not all the time so if I catch some while Im playing today Ill take an ingame

    shot and post it.

And I know how to fix it, I dont really want to actually, I think its kind of cool lol.

    Weird, I know.

And the main lands outside the city dont really have any but those are mostly suburbs so it

makes sense, theyre less dense than the main core of the city.

But yeah, Ill post some pics later.

This has seriously never happened to anyone else?

And btw, I dont have any industry at all.

Can you post a picture? This is really interesting.

This happened me before in a city where the only way to get to work was to go on the highway, and since there was a huge population, there was crazy amounts of pollution; but not as bad as your description.
