Haha, I remember that! I also remember when they changed the new SF Giants stadium four times. Everytime I went it was different name!

Thats dissapointing. It is really sad that our children will say, "Mommy, daddy, look! The Willis Tower!" Well, this is one person they can't force to call it the Willis Tower! 3.gif

No, it'll still be called the Sears Tower for most intents and purposes, so I doubt your children will call it the Willis Tower, which is too bland of a name to catch on.

I'm going to move to Canada if they paint it silver! It looks so horrible... The Chicago skyline will no longer be the Chicago skyline!

It'll always be the Sears Tower to me, but it'll be a little difficult to identify it as such if they paint it silver. However, corporations changing the names on landmarks is nothing new. For example, Telus renamed "Science World" in Vancouver to "The Telus World of Science", a name that everyone thought was completely ridiculous.

When I first heard this, I could not believe it. I am very agatated by this. They can't rename it. It would be like renaming the Chrysler building! I will always still call it the Sears tower.

Sometimes name changes can be good....

US Bank Tower (Minneapolis) lost its major tenet when they build a skyscraper (two actually) across the street and now has the cumbersome name of 225 South Sixth Street. Capalla, the online education company agreed to lease enough space in the tower to gain naming rights and now we don't have to say "that tower with the halo" or "225 South Sixth" or *point*, we can call it Capella Tower 4.gif.

But I'm with the crowd with the new name... naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh.

And repainting it does seem stupid, the skyline view from the planetarium seems to be centered on the black monolith that is the Sears Tower and the color works well to tie the skyline together. Silver would be weird (besides, seems like everything is going silver these days...).

Urgh, renaming the Sears Tower, and repainting it?

Are they so determined to grind the landmark into the ground? It's big and black and it's the Sears Tower... that's all we need to know.

The cool thing is that when I get older and my kids ask about "Willis" Tower, I can say, "Back in my day it was called Sears Tower. And instead of teleporting to the top we had to take the elevator." Okay, maybe teleporting is a bit much but a guy can dream!

My thought, is that it's another marketing-strategy. Remember, Aon, another insurance-broker, a big competitor to Willis, also has a tower in Chicago. So, why not take over another big, and even more well known building in Chicago, and rename it Willis Tower?

But i'll call it still the Sears Tower.

I work in the SEARS TOWER, and I can tell you this, the only people who are going to call it the Willis Tower are going to be the new tenants from the Willis Group and ignorant tourists. As for me, it'll be a cold day in Florida before I EVER call it the Willis Tower or anything else other than THE SEARS TOWER, for that matter.

They renamed the Skydome in Toronto to the Rogers centre a few years back, yet everyone I know still calls it the Skydome.

with all due respect, if they are going to rename the building, they should at least make it a nice sounding name.

It is highly unlikely to happen, because the Empire State Building is a National Historic Landmark.  It would take an immense amount of work to change it because it would defeat the purposed of designation.quote>

Not to mention that the Empire State Building takes its name from the Empire State, which it will always be in. On the other hand, "Sears Tower" is a corporate name... so if the Sears company no longer owns the building, it's expected that its new owner will rename it after their own company. They're not going to keep the name of a competitor on it, giving them free advertising, now are they?

Such is the nature of corporate names. They tend to be far less permanent than non-corporate ones. That it's managed to hold onto one name for 35 years is already something.

The Sears Tower is a promintant national landmark! It's the TALLEST BUILDING in the WHOLE CONTINENT/ WESTERN HEMISPHERE!!! I think of it as a symbol of American strength. If it were some other building in the country like the U.S. Bank Tower (Library Tower) in Los Angeles were renamed, we wouldn't bat an eye. But a famous building like the Sears should be almost immune to re-branding! If it were the Empire State Building, there would be an uproar nationwide! I would be glad to sign something or protest in order to restore the name.

Unless they made it a protected landmark very soon i dont think they can keep the name change from happening.

And since the building is only 35 years old that probably wont happen.

For now, anyway. The Freedom Tower in New York will steal that title from it in a few years.

And the Chicago Spire will be even taller, if they ever finish it.

This is dumb. Its like changing the name of the Empire State Building or Chrysler Building. Isn't the Sears Tower on the Historic Preservation Records or anything? *many people are not going to like this* 1974 is "historic" to me

The name change is now official.  The building is officially the Willis Tower as of today.  I will always call it the Sears Tower since it is an iconic landmark and I have visited it personally.  As the article mentions, there is a Facebook group for people who don't like the name change.
