AnnoyingDan's BAT Showcase
Back and Batting!

After a long absence due to RLS (real life syndrome), I'm back here at Simtropolis and working harder than ever!

Project Status:
All dates and times in the project status are that of Simtropolis.

Sellam Building B- Completed - Released June 27, 2005
Sellam Building A- Completed - Released June 29, 2005
The Zeller Building-
Completed - Released July 7, 2005
The Cryson Building- Batting (low priority) - Basic modeling
Perrington Apartments-
Batting Minor detailing, texture tweaking
Starker Tower Apartments-
Batting - Detailing, Texturing

The first building (and currently the only one in my queue) is another international style, black box building. Currently the only textures applied to it are the windows so that you would get a general idea of what the building will look like.

<img align=baseline>

I will add more pillars and the base and roof junk. Im also going to detail the lobby level (right now shown as a black box).

Any feedback, comments, suggestions are welcome.

I think that Simcity and stex need more 60's buildings (black or white box).

Every  north america's big cities have one.

I'm happy to see you back annoyingdan.44.gif

you can never go wrong with black buildings... too bad the actual game never came with black buildings... oh, you could put some sort of lit-up sign in the empty space above the windows near the top... perhaps it could make it seem more real-world-ish

There's always something classy about black buildings, particularly if they're just simple in design.

I just wanted to pop in and tell you that I really like your black boxes stuff! With so many people BATting shiny office towers, it's good to see that recently, more and more BATters are re-discovering the good old mid-rise (or smaller high-rise) buildings. Frogface and Ill_Tonkso have been releasing great stuff during the last wekks, and now you are also making these not-so-spectacular, but all the more useful buildings - you have my gratitude for sure, and I wish you good luck with your projects! 44.gif

One question: Would you be interested in BATting some larger R$$ buildings? R$$ is needed in heaps in order to sustain many office towers, but there are hardly any good high-capacity R$$ buildings on the STEX. 41.gif In another forum where I'm registered, some people even thought about modding your good old Reamop Tower to a huge R$$ building! [:0] Well, I could soothe them by modding 4 or 5 other buildings, but R$$ still is needed...

Thanks for the feedback everybody! I always enjoy your comments!

I've textured the new black box building, christened the Zeller Building. I've also detailed the base (I spent a whole hour on something that will barely be seen), and the roof.
    Zeller1.jpg

All I have to do is add more roofjunk, light it, export it and mod it.

@ T Wrecks- I'd be delighted to bat some R$$ buildings. I've noticed the same thing, I have a limitless variety of commercial buildings, but all my residential buildings are the same! Currently I have another Black Box building in the development stage, but after I get the ball rolling on that building I will work on some residential buildings.

Any feedback, comments, suggestions, and questions are welcome5.gif.

I love those office block towers, espacially those in black(we need much more of them 19.gif)!
I like the colour scheme of the windows, well done!

Maybe you could add some more roof junk, I think these 4 ventilations are a bit few.

Wow, that's really cool! 29.gif I can't wait to see what you will come up with, but whatever it will be - anything is better than having the shiniest downtown you can imagine, only to see it surrounded by the usual 3 or 4 R$$ high-rises which repeat endlessly and monotonously... 15.gif

Here is an update on the Zeller Building. I've added some more roofjunk, as well as rails to the catwalk. However the most noticeable addition is the ribbing to the mecanical floor and to the roof sides.

    align=baseline>

I think I am pretty much done with this building except for lighting modding, I still have a few minor details to work out.

I've started on another black box building, (sorry no pics yet) and also have cooked up some ideas for some residential buildings.

On the note of residential buildings, do you think I should also release this as a residential building? I know that these buildings can contain apartments in real life (usually mixed with offices, but thats not possible in SimCity). I could make a few tweaks to the building to make it more apartmenty But I will only do it if you guys want me to.

I dunno, that building's a great commercial, but I doubt it could fit in with box-residential buildings. Usually, those buildings are lighter in color and have that particular uniformity of vertical row windows, not covered glass boxes.

It would be only a recommendation that you do not use that box as a residential design, but keep it as a commercial tower.  However, I wish you luck if you do decide to do some apartment high-rise tower in the International style44.gif.

I agree with brancra, I don't think this building will be right as a residential apartment.

    Heres a little latenight update.

I'm done with most of the basic modeling for the Cryson Building, another black box building. It is slightly different from my other buildings as you will notice, not having an entire glass facade. It also isn't as dark as the others.
    align=baseline>

Obviously I still have a lot to work on this building. I still need to add roofjunk and texture everything.

I've also started to model a residential building. I still haven't finnished basic modeling so I don't have a picture.

Feedback, Comments, Suggestions, and questions welcome.

I think it needs a different base. The last 3-4 buildings have all had the same base, and basic style. While I like black/dark buildings, some variety with them would be better than them all being so similar. Just giving it a solid base rather than the columns would make a big difference. Other than that, great stuff. Its nice to see more dark buildings.

I totally agree with what most others said here: Your Zeller building wouldn't really look that good as a residential building, I think - and I'm saying that as someone who modded sargeantcm's Liberty Building into a growable NY-style R$$, among other things... 3.gif

These generic office boxes look really perfect for what they are, though. 44.gif

However, I gotta agree with Oerwinde: At least the last building could benefit from a different base, maybe in the sahpe of ground floors that extends a bit farther outside instead being hidden behind columns.

On a side note, I realized yesterday that your Sellam Buildings A&B are the black counterpart to jtportland's white Standard Insurance Center complex... 31.gif

It's Decided then, the Zeller Building will not become a residential building.

On the note of residential buildings, I finnished the basic modelling of my first apartment building enough to give you an idea on what it will look like. It is a large 37 story building designed in the 60's modernist style. It was inspired by a building I saw in New York City and another building in my hometown (well the major city where my hometown is located) of Phoenix (we have a lot of 60's modernist buildings in Phoenix, including our airport and our civic center)
    Perrington1.jpg

As I said, I'm not that far in modelling this building. That block on the bottom of the building is where the entrance will be.

I haven't made any changes yet to the Cryson building, because first I want to ask you your opinion. What would you think if I added a base similar to the one on my White Commerce Center?
    WhitehallBase.jpg
I've been browsing books that have pictures of these types of buildings and pretty much all of them have either the hidden base, or the style on the WCC. There is one other option, but I don't like it, as when I make a design I ususally try to stick with it, which would be to add another whole section to the entire building (kinda like T Wrecks suggested).

I personally think that any three would look good on this building, so I'm asking you your opinion2.gif.

I finnished detailing the Zeller Building and lit it. I tried lighting the lobby floor, but it wouldn't light correctly. I might try again before i render but I don't know that I can get it to light.

The Zeller Building sits comfortably on a 4x2 lot with at least 3m on any side of the building. I will probably make three lots for it. A 4x2 CO

That Zeller Building looks pretty fine the way it is. You just go ahead and export it, man! Your plans about the lots sound ok to me, and I'm gonna fine-tune the stats anyway...

Sorry, I'm not in the condition to post anything more sensible... I'm seriously drunk and listening to some m***erf***ing Rock'n'Roll... gonna listen to some more and catch some Z's afterwards. 2.gif

The Zeller building looks pretty much good to go. I like the way that the foyer entrance is set back from the bulk of the building. Something that seems to be popular with buildings of the time.

    I've got a small update...

On the Perrington Apartments, I've worked on the rooftop. I made the roof entrance thing more stylish (I'm sorry but I'm having a hard time using words today). I've also added the rails and the roof floor.
    Perrington2.jpg

I still haven't decided what I'm gonna do with the entrance (It's usually the hardest for me to make because I never really plan my entrances), but I'll probably just do something simple (A few doors, windows). I also have to do the window frames (but thats really easy).

On the Cryson Building, I've decided to do something similar to what I did on the Whitehall Commerce Center. I also might do somthing that involves those little shop props withing the game (something most people don't do with their creations, I never knew why).

I'm terribly sorry if I'm a little hard to understand, but as I said earlier, I seem to be a little slow today (verbally, but not with the BAT heh2.gif)

Well, the shape of that building looks nice - it's simple and realistic, exactly what an R$$ building should look like.

As for the entrance, have you considered extending that flat block towards the bottom right towards the front side of the lot with a kind of roof? Then there could be a small driveway parallel to the road which would go past the building, right below that roof... Another possibility would be to break up the blockiness of the building at the base by cutting off the bottom right corner and putting the main entrance into the resulting diagonal wall.

Oh, and you know what? If you could finish THIS building, you'd be my hero! 44.gif

I've modeled and textured the entrance. I've also textured the stone part of the facade.I realized that I've never shown you all four sides of the building. Since the building's for sides are all unique (unlike my other buildings) I've decided to show it to you now instead of fully textured.

On a different note, I have successfully rendereed the Zeller Bulding and have started modding it.

    Feedback Welcome.
