I'd prefer they skip the always boring halftime shows and get back to the business of football. It is a football game, not a concert.

Er... every song off their first album contains profanity save for one ("Settle for Nothing"). As for their later hits, "Bulls on Parade" and "Guerilla Radio" both also do... "Calm Like a Bomb" and "Sleep Now in the Fire" do not, but neither are particularly family friendly, either. Those Parental Advisory stickers aren't just about the swear words, you know. RATM isn't music you want your little kids listening to, period.

Getting stats and analysis of the game is far more important than some lame-ass performance.  Half-time doesn't need to so damn long either.  20 minutes tops.

All I have to contribute to this conversation is this: The NFL plays it safe by showcasing older, classic rock bands. Not only are they trying to save themselves the embarrassment of another Janet Jackson incident, but they are also sticking to a music genre that has a broad appeal across cultures and age groups. The problem with selecting any one band is that while football transcends cultures, ethnicities, and ages, music simply does not. A rap artist may be popular amongst the younger crowds, the under 30 age group is only a small segment of the entire NFL consumer population, and certainly not the side with the most money. Similarly, a country singer is not going to sit well with a large segment of the population. The bands that the NFL has chosen in recent years may not be the most popular with most people, but they still are appeal to more people than most bands and singers.

That being said, I would still prefer the NFL picked someone that can still sing and play an instrument, so getting someone more recent and younger, with no arthritis in their hands would be great. Nickelback seems like a pretty nice option personally.
