Just like the others do in the CJ's. What do you want the city/region to look like?

Check the Omnibus maybe.

Some typical cities are grid styles, so just start dragging your roads into squares and add outward. You could do it totally random though so the shape of your city is a polygon or even just random splotches of development. The possibilities are pretty much endless, its you're imagination in the end. Good luck!

I usually start out by designing my basic highway system, and then design my downtown with a grid and then as I go further out I do less and less grid until it's totally random.

I love building a grid pattern. My OCD Will not allow to build C and R in diagonal patters since they look all distorted and just bleh! But I'll start with building my basic transportation system. I'll lay the highway, then rail and stations, then bus stops, then finally zone. I also add parks as I go, but I kinda plan em. Also, you'll want to lay pipe in a grid pattern. There is no other efficient way of doing it. Just remember that water pipe reaches 6 tiles.

I always start with some residentials in one place (often near water) and start  to "discover" the rest of the tile as the needs rise. I always build, what's most needed and how it really would develop and try to keep money in black numbers. As the tile has no space left in any direction, I go to the next tile.

The look of my cities are realistic but they need a lot of time to develop2.gif

I think if you really don't know how to planning a city you can try plot a regular layout way first

This matter like this plot the road with 8 x 6 and it end like this

So plotting like this you can try to think and see how your citizen flowing in you city and next time i think you will know how to planning city.

Take a look at your map and think about what kind of a city feels good. will it be a suburban sprawl victim or a dense urban area, sprangled rural townships and so on... that's the very basic thing to do.

then go and take any map available (google, live yahoo, you name it) and take a look at actual cities / areas to get a feeling for the layout.

this done, go to your region and think about where to put industrial areas, downtown, residential areas, airport seaport and so on... and then lay down the highway network, railways, avenues, roads, streets according to what you've figured out... at best following this order cuz you go from planning (what to put where) over rough sketches (highways) to details (streets)

this might take some time for both the consideration phase and the productive phase, but it's definitely worth it in the end.

Wow. I have never heard of planning city like that. You just made it sound like an art form, something comparable to a beautiful piece of music or a wonderful piece of art work. Just amazing. You have obviously been at this for while, haven't you?

I build in what i call a relaxed grid. Its basically a grid, but with interruptions in it to add what i want, like a large park, or a mall or some parking. I may split the city also by adding some canals (i have yet to master this type of transportation, but i use them often in my cities). For my latest city, which covers quite a few large city tiles, i have to make a stricter grid system, with very few inerruptions. I have the occasional large park of roundabout in my cities, but its kept to a minimum.

Hope this helps!

i i have played this game long enough to know that if you want your sims to use some thing exclusively like mass transit, then you have to kill the option of the sims to choose to drive. thay sure as heck wont walk to far so keeping them from making a driving trip is the only option to make them get to the other side via bus or rail or subway. this will have a big impact on how your city will develop

Often, your planning is determined by what kind of city you want to build. a metropolis has perfect mass transit, a strict grid system, and extrmely efficient plannign via waste and water and power, etc. A suburban area would probably be either a simple grid system covered in a bilion tiny wasteful homes 2.gif , with the occasional park or strip mall, or a curvy cul-de-sac land.

Really you must decide how your planning your city. You have alot of options to choose from, and for visuals, just check out some of the greaat cjs on this site, or the MDs on sc4d.

Hope this helps

Grids are boring, seeing as I used that system with every other Simcity game.  I usually start with the essentials first, police, fire, hospital, schools/  Then I let my imagination take over.  I let the game decide where my downtown will be.  I LOVE designing residential neighborhoods.  I try and go for realism.

But yes, it is important to have a plan with roads and highways.  Try and cover your whole area from the beginning, you will need it later.

Grids are fine im my opinion just as long as they are used right. I never do a boring square grid but i tend to make my roads curve and create the illusion that that road is not north to south. This effect is especially pronounced in region view. Also try and make roads streets and zones conform to the terrain. I do what GMT does all the time. Google Earth is a VERY useful thing to look at when designing your region. Try making your city as realistic as the game will allow, it can be a pain but the results are worth it.

I made a mistake and built a toll booth right on one of my highway connections. I didnt realize it at first but by doing that i killed part of my intercity ecocnomy. I wonder how many times that was done? I wonder hpw many promising cities were killed off by such a bonehead move?
