Oh, I had thought this completely ended a year ago, but it seems I was mistaken about that.  A year ago, DRM ended with only one of the four major record labels currently selling on iTunes, though Jobs's opposition to DRM was already very apparent by that time.

Now, all four labels have agreed to end DRM with the compromise being a slightly modified pricing structure.

69 cents for older songs

99 cents for moderately popular songs

$1.29 for new releases.

I like this.  4.gif

Sales must have been down.

As a matter of fact, sales are slightly down, according to the article. One theory is that DRM is a culprit, since it irritates people without actually doing anything at all to protect music from being copied. Yup, that was successful. 3.gif

Well, that's fantastic to hear that they won't be putting any DRM on iTunes music anymore, not sure about the price-rises for the more popular songs though. I did eventually end up downloading a couple of things from iTunes.

But dose this mean that copying songs is still illegal, even though it's now in everybody's power to do so?

    Beautiful!

I wouldn't buy from iTunes anyway, especially since they insist on overcharging for songs in Australia compared to the US.

iTunes is such a rip-off. Especially on account of my computer ends up having to be formatted at least once a year and if that happened there's $1000 down the drain.

Yeah and iTunes devalue Australian currency.

Cockatoo: It's still illegal. They just removed DRM since it was turning off customers and doing nothing to prevent illegal copying. Kinda shooting themselves in the foot. 3.gif

Duack: And that's why we back up our MP3 files on CD-R: just in case that happens! 9.gif

    Questions:

    1. Will I have to pay to upgrade my current iTunes purchased songs to DRM free like I have with "iTunes Plus" DRM free music?

    2. Pricing Structure: How long will new releases remain $1.29, and what differentiates a 99

You never had to listen before, either. Ever heard of this thing called "ignoring it"?21.gif

Also, count the "now"s. You're being redundant there.

As I only recently started using Itunes a few days ago I am really pleased with this news. Maybe no DRM music and then no DRM games. Well, I can dream.....
