Bush designates ocean conservation areas!

George Bush will designate nearly 200,000 square miles of the Pacific Ocean as conservation areas on Tuesday, recasting his record on the environment just two weeks before leaving the White House.

Tuesday's formal announcement will establish Bush as the leader who has protected more of the oceans than anyone else in the world, environmentalists said.

The three regions in the Pacific Ocean encompass some 195,280 square miles of remote and relatively uninhabited island chains.

They include pristine coral reefs, vanishing marine species and the deepest place on Earth.

Their preservation brought rare praise from environmentalists who have spent much of the last eight years fighting Bush on climate change, air pollution, and wildlife management.

'The president has given the world a Texas-sized gift,' said Diane Regas, manager of the ocean programme at the Environmental Defence Fund.

But the marine reserves were as much a gift from Laura Bush, who was credited with heading off determined opposition from the vice-president, Dick Cheney, as well as business leaders in the Mariana Islands who had lobbied on behalf of fishing and energy exploration.quote>

So the biggest ocean preservation project in the history of man and NO ONE has anything other than "oh goody goody" to say? I bet if Obama did this, this thread would be full of "oh he's so great"

So is the purpose of this thread is to flame bait, or to tell us that the President despite being unpopular has done something good, creating an ocean conservation zone?

Your insulting the relative intelligence of this site.

Nah I'm saying, he actually did something good, and then when I point something and you all go anti-Bush. I wonder... do any of you know that Bush faced the hardest decisions since the presidents of the WWII era had?

[sarcasm]It must be a scam. Everybody knows that Bush is just the Devil, and is only doing this to distract everyone while he eats live kittens and sets orphanages on fire. He must be doing it because that's where Bin Laden is really hiding, or because he doesn't want anyone to see him dumping nuclear waste there. Just like Barbarossa says, he's the ultimate evil incarnate so there must be something else we don't know. He must be using this to somehow further his plans to infect the whole world with fail and AIDS.[/sarcasm]

You know, even though Bush's made a plethora of mistakes and has a lot of stains on his presidency, you have to attribute him to the fact the we haven't had a terrorism attack here since 9/11, while other European and Asian countries can't say the same thing.

I agree with ilikehotdogsalot. We might not all like some of the decisions that President Bush has made, but at least we are safe, prosperous, and free. (well sort of)

Yeah, it's good that he actually did SOMETHING good. However, keep in mind this fellow has been in office for 8 years.

There's no way on earth that any kind of last-minute "good" thing can possibly undo all of the crazy stuff he did.

I'm not surprised he did something positive every now and then. Even Hitler had a few positive attributes, as did all of history's worst leaders. Bush is no exception.

Hey ilikehotdogs. Great point ya made there. Considering he did a number of things that people ON HERE haven't heard about. I think it's good to bring up some positive things about him before he leaves office. I find the bush hatred on here funny, didn't know I'd get this bad of a response 43.gif

Roflmao. You are comparing BUSH to HITLER? Haha. I was just doing research on Hitler, and trying to gain more knowledge of WWII, because I'm the kinda guy that doesn't mind to learn about this stuff. Comparing Bush to Hitler is like comparing cement to a rubber tire. Only thing they've barely got in common is they have led something big.

We are talking about coral reefs here, right?

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

I really don't think this has anything to do with the TIME he has been in office. We should simply weigh the good deeds against the bad deeds, and see what comes out of it.

I'm not saying that time doesn't factor into it though -- obviously he could've done this anytime during those years. The fact that he IS doing it is what counts, as cheap as it may seem. More good, even if it's last minute is better than no good at all.

    It took him 8 years...

I was waiting for something concerning conservation for the past 8 years.

And this is it. Issue is that he needs to get a treaty drafted...

Oops I forgot...He's out of time!

At least he did keep us safe. But thanks to him the world no longer respects us.

We are the laughing stock of the world and the current universe.

Looks like everyone's favorite idiot actually did something worth while for a change, pity he's only 8 years late with this change of heart on the environmental front. Dick Chaney probably thought there might be oil there.

He's probably trying to save what's left of his tattered reputation before he's gone.

He's actually designating American territorial possessions to be protected, if I know my geography correctly.

And this is an obvious political ploy on the part of a president who has spent the last two months desperately trying to get every environmental protection law known to man eradicated. It looks nice on paper, certainly, but I don't think the special interests are at all concerned with this.

Well I wouldn't say he has some other motive, but protecting a part of the ocean the size of Texas is a lot easier and cheaper than protecting a section of land. Also, it depends on were exactly this area is. It probably isn't really used much anyway because if it was, he wouldn't have it protected.

I suppose its a good thing. Still, it doesn't really make up for 1,000,000 Iraqi civilians (although the majority weren't directly killed by US forces). Still, bush should remember, two wrongs don't make a right. But 3 rights just cover them up. Can he do two more rights in 20 days?

hey give the guy a break, he has done something right. so what if he is trying to change his legacy, forget the man, remember the deed. Bush should be removed from the equation

plus, we treat the ocean rather strangley, as a pantry and a toilet/bin so don't say " the oceans are not worth it"

Well, I know that Bush and Hitler do have a lot of differences (but also a few similarities), and I'm not saying that Bush is another Hitler. I was just pointing out that even the worst leaders have a few positive attributes, so it is nothing to be surprised about.
