Affected zones around transportation hubs.

There are circled serviceable zones around infrastructure units such as police, fire, etc. Why couldn't they do the same thing with bus stops, subways, etc.? Anything within the circled zone around a particular stop would certainly be within walking distance of anywhere else in that zone and within commuting distance of any other stop in the system. I don't know if it's doable, but it would certainly be a great mod if anyone can.

It would also be a help in trying to figure out where to put stops.

I think it's seven tiles that sims can walk (56 Meters 9.gif).

I also think that it can be tweaked in the simcity1.dat

    Hello ewd76,

While this is a nice idea - it is not all that easy to do -

The service area circles that currently exist are tied to a funding rate.

While commute patterns involve the overall length of the commute,

the available transit options within the general line of the commute,

the length of any chosen transit option within the cummute path,

the wealth level of the given commuter, etc.

For example - one (in theory) could drive to a parking garage,

walk to a bus-stop, take a bus to within walking distance of a subway station,

take the subway across town, walk to a El-Rail station, and then take the El-Rail

to within walking distance of the desired (C or I) destination.

Just how does the service area of the bus, subway, and El-Rail

stations - for a trip such as in the example above - compare with

a more direct trip (say walking to a monorail station, take the monorail -

which just happens to have another station at the right distince and

in the correct direction, and walk to the desired destination).

On second thought - let us just throw out all of the above realism - and go with this idea.

This would definitely cut down on all of the commute hassles.

No detail is too small to be micromanaged.

I think the OP is specifically referring to the "service area" as the max distance a sim will walk to or from the station (not how far you can bus or drive to a station). In fact he mentioned that any jobs, houses, or transit stops within that area would be within commuting distance from other transit service areas in the city.

Unfortunately, the reason why this would be complicated is that there is no "radius" for walking distance. As far as I know, the sims walk along the roads, not through other zones, so the max walking distance would have to be measured along routes the sims would actually take, and the service area would obviously not look like a circle. Still, I'm sure it could be done somehow, but it would not be as simple as showing a service radius..

Instead of a circle, it could highlight the distance on the roads. That would be complicated and probably wouldn't look pretty, but it's one way of doing it.

The main thing would be adding a radius for walking distances. There are often alleyways and spaces between high rises which are easy to walk through.
