BristolCoatofArms.jpg

Bristol, pronounced 'Briss-tall' in the local dialect and 'Bristle' in modern, is a city and city county situated 112 miles southwest of Perth and 18 miles northeast of the nearest city, Tyndall.

With a population of 1,112,464 it stands as Febosk's fifth most populous country and acts as the head of the country's 4th or West Zone. It received a royal charter in 1166 and was granted county status in 1314. At one point it was Febosk's second largest city, serving as an important and bustling port for the entire west coast of the country. This was the case until other cities along the coast grew as port cities and Bristol lost its trading tradition shortly after the Industrial Revolution. The city sits on the Toul river, slightly inland from the coast.

Where Bristol originally functioned as a city of trade and was home to the largest port in the country, nowadays the economy has built on car manufacturing, tourism and aerospace manufaturing. The port that was once inland and well within the city limits has since been half destroyed during the Wars and since then, redeveloped and built on. Now, the areas are occupied by modern flats and offices but a small piece of history known as the Lady Mary ship sits in its original place to mark the centre of the once bustling centre of trade.

    BroadmeadAvenue.jpg

Welcome to the first update. I'm getting rather festive at the moment so quite suitably, I show you Broadmead Avenue which is the largest boulevard in the city. It heralds expensive department stores, boutiques, restaurants and such and is also home to two of the most famous theatres in the country - The Bristol Regal and The Bristol Hippodrome. Today has been the final day of the school term so come tonight, the streets will surely be flooded with shoppers out doing last minute Christmas shopping.

Broadmead Avenue also acts as an example of congestion-easing. It was once just a wide pedestrianised thoroughfare from City Central station to the river at the southern end but it was converted into an avenue in an attempt to ease congestion elsewhere. It has helped other smaller roads somewhat over the last one hundred years and remains one of the least congested avenues in the city.

It sure is great to see you back, Mike! In typical fashion, you've made a fantastic start to this CJ. I see everything I liked from your previous one. Lots of different buildings, good amounts of traffic, and of course, the pedestrian streets. Very nice work, I am definitely looking forward to more. 4.gif

nottheboss - Welcome my friend, thanks very much, I hope you enjoy the future updates as much as you have this one.

Petrovar Ambassador - Welcome and thanks a lot.

    newyorkrunaway1 - Thanks mate!

Tomasneto - Thanks very much mate!

fabsies55 - Hey thanks, glad you like the city's theme. I do love Paris though and its many different buildings and wide boulevards have inspired to make a city like this and in this way.

ky72x - Hi there my old friend, good to hear from you. Yes, Alfington was a beautiful city but I have lost too many of them to too many ruddy computer crashes! I have decided to construct a much bigger and more cosmopolitan metropolis and have named it after my own town here in England. Glad you like the new city and look forward to hearing from you again soon mate!

    TheCentre.jpg

This update shows you the official 'centre' of the city. This of course is in historical terms as opposed to financial or retail terms. Broadmead Avenue and Broadmead Parade is very much the retail core of the city and the financial heart continues to expand way to the east of the centre but this is the historical centre of the city. The area covered in this update was where one of the waterways extended from the city port into the city and ships used to moor up in front of many of the edifices you still see today. Up until the start of the First War, there was water up as far as the doors of Bristol Cathedral and a ferry service used to run from the doors of the cathedral to elsewhere not only within but also around the city.

Over the years, the centre has changed. Due to the financial crisis that was the Economic Lull of the 1920s that followed the violence of the First War, it would have costed far too much for the city's waterway to be reconstructed after the devastation that was inflicted on it during the war. Following the waterway being bombed to effectively destroy the trade and business that came about because of the port, the area had to be paved over completely. During the 1940s, the traffic of the city increased quite considerably along with the introduction of trams and buses so many of the terminals of these transports were built here and various transport services filtered out from here. The Second War then resulted in the centre being bombed once again and so the work of regentrifying the centre was truly underway again.

After the war had ended, a war memorial was built at the end of the current waterway to mark the success of Febosk against other countries and an efficient four-lane road system was put in place linking in with other roads around the city. Nowadays, the city benefits significantly from this as the traffic in the centre is so much better. Fortunately, most of the buildings were not harmed during both wars. It is clear where older buildings once stood as now more modern buildings stand in their place.

So enough of the historical waffle, here is the 'centre' of Bristol:

    AWetSundayinTown.jpg

Not only is today the shortest day of the year, it has also been the wettest day so far this month. The forecast said it was coming and the whole western side of the country has been plagued with gales and heavy rain. With the prospect of more heavy rain and potentially snow over the next few days, the traffic chaos that has been in the city today is most likely to continue into the new week. Today has been a very much 'stay at home' day however people have still walked the streets - with or without umbrellas.

Train delays and cancellations have resulted in people being stranded either in the station or at other stations along train lines and many people's Christmas travel arrangements have been pretty much bu**ered up completely for today. Hopefully a break in the weather will allow services to resume to normal times tonight.

Replies will come with the next update!

    - Lol, thanks. Well just a bit of seasonal winter weather that Febosk encounters a few times every year. You are having ice storms? I love ice storms but we haven't had one since December 5th along with thunder and lightning. Glad you like the open walkways; they are a wonderful feat of the PED Mall Tiles but unfortunately I don't think they work with the most recent NAM.

Twenty20: Wow, all this looks great ! I love european cities and yours is awesome, very very detailed and realistic. Excellent rain effects, and very good work.

-Thanks very much my friend. Glad you like the rain, I don't think the Bristolians did though 3.gif.

Good job adding the rain the the pictures. That's another thing that I'm glad to see return, the role that the weather plays in the updates. Looks like there are still quite a few residents braving the storm. Let's see if they do the same for the snow, I really can't wait to see some! 9.gif
