Exactly what the title says; what do you think is the best Christmas song of all time.

For me, it would have to be either 'Merry Christmas' by Slade, or 'I wish it could be Christmas everyday' by Wizard.

(This will be interesting)

Do they know it's christmas.

I know it's not a carol, but it still beats any of the old songs...

The Darkness - Christmas Time (Don't Let the Bells End). After 24 years of existence i'm getting bored of the old ones. My choice here was the last really good, traditional styled Christmas song before Christmas music was murdered by Simon Cowell.

Perhaps only UK members will get what I mean. I don't know how the whole 'Christmas number 1' thing works over seas. Here the situation's grown dire.

Bah humbug!

EDIT: On reflection that was a bit depressing6.gif! Hopefully these smileys will help to restore your view of me to one of endless cheer!  9.gif39.gif    Ho, ho, ho!

Fairytale of New York, hands down.

Always tops polls here (Ireland) when it comes to 'Best Christmas Song'.

It only gets worse as the decades wear on.   Which is one reason I like the "novelty" songs like the one about Snoopy and the Red Baron.  (

is a video which uses the cartoon footage very nicely.)

As for the traditional songs . . . I like them more when Manheim Steamroller or the Trans-Siberian Orchestra are performing them.

(and I do think that

oldie but goodie is an excellent job of visually displaying music.)

As for what is the "best" song . . . I'll have to think about that some more . . .

This one is mine as well.  Just too bad that a song that was recorded for Famine Relief in Africa isn't sold in the U.S. anymore.....Thanks to the Bandaid company suing the record company and Geldoff because of the name of the 'band'.   A truly pathetic move on the Bandaid Co......a bunch of Scrooges if ya ask me.

The worst part is when it's played out of season.

When I hear Christmas music before Black Friday or after Christmas itself I want to rip heads off.

Same goes for if I see Christmas decorations before Black Friday. Afterward it's understandable that they're not going to come down immediately but if it's February and they're still up, something's wrong.

In any case, by the time Christmas passes, you certainly end up sick of hearing the music.

At my house we've got this little tradition going where we listen to the Beach Boys when we're taking down the tree. 5.gif

Christmas in Hollywood, by Hollywood Undead.  Once you get past the perverted lyrics and overbearing sexual themes, it's actually a pretty decent song!

We should have to get past perveted lyrics on a Christmas song?

I wonder if anyone can do one of those with out useing Trans Siberian Orchestra?

Yes they can....

What? No Ho-Ho-Hoey songs? He's got some great ones.

But anyways, my favorite has got to be the Stone Temple Pilots EXCELLENT acoustic version of "Christmas Time Is Here." I had that downloaded in college, and I have looked EVERYWHERE for it since, but no dice.

Only the original will do, the remake with the choir just blows. It's also more than a little anti-Christmas, as well.

Gary Hoey rocks, the Grinch is brilliant.

The Night Santa Went Crazy by Weird Al is a true winner, and Tom Lehrer's A Christmas Carol is a timeless classic. Not to forget Steve Martin and Paul Simon's Silver Bells from SNL 1976. (edit: found only audio, not video. This did air, but no one recorded it I guess.

)

3 Guys From Hollywood's Relatives Are Coming To Town is a great lost classic that I could not find, hence 'lost classic'.

I forgot ELP's Nutrocker, itself a remake of the original by King B and the Bumbles circa 1957.

Other than some of the Gregorian chants like Adeste Fideles, I think the best Christmas song/carol ever is:

Stille Nacht

by Franz Gruber

Please remember that this was an extempore song written for acoustic guitar and voices because the mice ate the organ bellows.

My favorite version of that song is the duet with David Bowie and Bing Crosby.

It's made a few lists of "Weirdest Duets Ever" and "Strangest Christmas Song Ever" and so forth.  and, I admit I enjoy that aspect of it.   But I like the other song in there too.

Elvis Presley - Blue Christmas, that's a classic! Just a couple of years ago, I would have said "Last Christmas" by Wham!, but the radio stations have played it to death, and it got covered too much too. It's only annoying now.

I often listen to Mariah Careys "Merry Christmas" album to get into Christmas mood... probably one of the best Christmas albums around.

Good King Wenceslas. I really don't know why, but I think it's great.

To search for the ideal city today is useless. For all cities are different. Each one has its own spirit, its own problems, and its own pattern of life. As long as the city lives, these aspects continue to change. Thus to look for the ideal city is not only a waste of time but may be seriously detrimental. In fact, the concept is obsolete; there is no such thing.
