Scrolling/zooming woes

Well, originally SC4 ran VERY fast on my machine, scrolling and zooming were very quick. Until Friday. The replacement 8800GTX BFG sent me arrived, and after I installed it, scrolling and zooming in SC4 became horribly slow. If the camera isn't moving, it runs fast as usual, but when I move around or zoom, it stutters like crazy. Fraps would be reading 1 FPS.

I tried reinstalling the drivers, going back 175 from 178... nothing seems to work. What do I do? 8.gif

People have had problems with newer cards such as an 8800, the common concensus is that the card demands information faster than the game can give it to the card.

I have no clue what could be causing that. One would think that a new video card makes a game faster... or is it the same model as before? Have you tried to update your drivers?

TV-VCR, have you tried using software rendering for the game. That is what I have to do with ATI drivers in XP, Vista works ok with hardware rendering though.

It's the same model as before, an Nvidia 8800GTX. My previous 8800GTX had a circuitry problem where occasionally (about once a month) the fan on the card would suddenly stop, causing it to overheat, causing the computer to freeze and then shut down. That's why I sent it back (it worked fine otherwise though). SC4 ran very fast before installing the replacement card, now it's slow. And yes, I did update my drivers to 178 after installing the new card, but I also tried going back to the older 175, and that didn't work.

Holy hell. I just did that, and SC4 is fast like it's on steroids. Even faster than before when it was already fast. 46.gif

Thanks tungston. Didn't realize the solution was that simple!

EDIT: I had to go back to hardware rendering. It was too much of a blow to the graphics quality that I could stand. Yes, I had every options at max, but things still looked like utter crap.

Is there some way I can resolve this without having to use software rendering? I mean, I didn't have to before! Help!

We care, it's just that we are baffled...SC4 hates new hardware, except for RAM, it loves RAM.

You might try PMing Darmok.  I seem to remember that he had a similar problem to this after he updated his graphic card drivers.  He finally solved it, but I think it was just that he went back to the old drivers, and you say you've done that.  Still, it might be worth dropping him a line.

    Sorry, that's all I got.

    Bye for now.

I am having a problem running SC4, when I scroll up or down in my cities, the image catches and overlays the new area I've scrolled to. It's not a speed issue, I can scroll without lagging. But the part of the city I scroll does not produce the right area. I can fix it by flipping angles but it's getting really annoying. Anyone heard of this problem?
