Canals/Waterways - Image

Although it may be of no interest to most people, I thought I'd still show an image referring to canals/waterways and the waterlots issues caused by RH.  It's a problem, but as shown on the image it's possibly to create realistic canals/waterways using the in-game tools and the watermod.  The only thing needed is patience and some soft hands while working with the levelling <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif border=0>

That Looks great!!6.gif, I'm sure it took you a hell of a lot of time!. Just one question, do I see two rauilway tunnels next to each other? I tried that often but I couldn't get it done, please prove me wrong1.gif. Oh and by the way, this wasn't done with the RTK now, was it?. Greetz,

    Nope, there are two railway tunnels - going down right before the canal/waterway location.  This is not a difficult task at all as long as you ensure that the levelling is right.  The image below show the two tunnels going down under the office block to continue under the canal/waterway and entering the ground level again, (as shown in the initial image);

    /idealbb/files/Agra3a.jpg

    This third image shows the underwater tunnel for an avenue and a railway together, constructed with no problems - or difficulties - at all.  As mentioned, some patience while sculpting the terrain and a soft hand while placing the tunnels and finishing the area is all there's to it <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif border=0>

    /idealbb/files/Agra4a.jpg

    My city is built on a mountainuos terrain with a big river dividing the area in two halfs, and I don't want a lot of bridges over the river everywhere, and a great solution is to create underwater tunnels instead, (mind you that I do have a lot of tunnels and bridges in this city - although many of them are hidden behind buildings and flora, apart from the hilly terrain itself that covers some of them <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif border=0>

    You can even construct bridges on dry land with a little trick that makes it possible to develop some more interesting areas.  The image below show such an area where an avenue bridge is placed like described.  Since it's a big plaza in front of it that's gradually slooping to continue to the office blocks on the other side of the bridge, I wanted this particular bridge to create the effect of a continuing plaza under the bridge where the office buildings are placed on the same level as the lowest part of the plaza itself, (as shown in the image).  This entire task demanded more though than just constructing tunnels <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif border=0>, but as a guideline I can say that the arrows showing up when placing a lot or laying out a RCI zone is essential. <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/1.gif border=0> Anyway, here's the image;

    The first image show a better view of the plaza described in a previous post where I'm using a avenue bridge to create a specific effect of realism. Not all buildings are on the same level as roads you know;

    what is the trick to dragging bridges across land, as in your beautiful plaza shown here?

    thanks in advance!

    Thanks! 1.gif I'm sure there are more ways of doing what I'm doing, but I've found that when attempting to place bridges on a ground, (lower ground), without water below, it just won't work! However, the trick is to use the terrain tool using the lowest grade, (shift+1), and lowering the terrain tile closest to the tile you want the bridge to start and end at down to the first water level. It won't show other though, so you need to test with a park lot and see if it refuses to be placed due to water being present. In most cases it's enough to do this on one side only, but in other cases it's necessary to do it on both sides before the bridge will be built.

    A word of causion though!;

    Developing this kind of city isn't necessarily costly - if done right! Follow these guidelines;

    1. Plan ahead!

    If you believe a road/street needs to be extended to an avenue later on, ensure to leave required tiles available, (hidden by parks, trees or walkways, just to mention a few examples). Finding out your road/street needs this development could otherwise result in costly operations, where not only nearby infrastructure gets damaged but also developed buildings - especially ones being placed in a complicated manner.

    If you're like me and return to specific areas for further development, these areas often becomes even more complicated at the end, thus allowing for less improvements in the future - apart from the cost itself involved!

    The same goes for tunnels! Once a tunnel have been constructed as shown in my images, it

     Agra, Every picture you have displayed is simply amazing. Very realistic. I like the elevated road over plaza the best but also love the way you got the building to build up with the slope of the land. I would love to see more of your region.

    Thanks guys - again! Actually, this isn't that difficult to do! It requires a lot of patience and a gentle touch with your hand, but above all - try to imagine how real cities DO look like! For instance, there aren't any cities with huge building or lot foundations. Buildings nornally follow the sloop of the terrain, something that's possible to do in this game by paying close attention to buildinglot and zone arrows and their attachements towards roads/streets - or not!

    Practice, that's about all I can say! It isn't possible to teach out every single step in order to create or develop realism. If the mind of the mayor isn't close to realism, than it won't matter how many steps are being described to him!

    I'll try to post some more images later on! 1.gif

    That must have taken forever. What you have done in your city truly looks great, and it deserves several of these: <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif><ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/24.gif>

    If Maxis creates a new version of SimCopter or Streets of SimCity, this should be the city where all the screenshots for the cover come from. It's just that good.

    As for the waterfalls they're all made by PEG. Simply search on the LEX for his lots and you'll find it! Mind you that the canal viewable in my screenshots are made without any mods or lots. Since RH doesn
