My favorites are:

Helsinki (~ 500,000)
helsinki.jpg
Helsinki combines modern and historical architecture. To be quite honest, it is the best city in Europe.

Zagreb (~ 750,000)
croatia-zagreb-g5.jpg
In my opinion, Zagreb has the best architecture in Europe.

Vilnius (~ 500,000)
Vilnius_Skyline_2.jpg
Vilnius is a very modern city, as you can see from the skyline. It is also a very wealthy city.

mmmm all opinions are respectable... but stating that Helsinki is the best city in Europe... well I think you need to travel a bit more.

No offense to Finnish people, though. I've been there and it's a great country, but even the Fins will tell you Helsinki is horrible.

I'd tell you to add to that list Barcelona, Sevilla, Nice, Florence, Budapest, Ghent, Prague, Dubrovnik, Krakaw... just to name a few...

There are always the greats like London, Paris, Rome, Prague, Venice, Amsterdam, Barcelona...

However, I've always romanticized Vienna.

Grandiose imperial Hapsburg architecture always plays well with me:

Ooooo, awww.
But let's be honest...

...great Kultur is all about the food, especially the desserts:

Strauss and Mozart with chocolate torte and coffee in cream.

Well, Thessaloniki is probably the best big city in Greece, but Athens is a very nice city. I've been to Athens twice. Sure, its not as nice as Thessaloniki (due to size) but it IS a nice city. Especially with the Olympics!

It is, but keep in mind Turkey is transcontinental. Plus most of Turkey follows western European cultures. Excluding some rural areas. You know, Kurds?

Oh and Constantinople is a place called "Istanbul," in case you're history-illiterate.

and i'm Greek, in case you didnt know. My people have been calling it constantinople for the past 1700 years. No need to change the name now, because they remembered they needed to make Constantinople look more "turkish" rather than byzantine in 1930. 4.gif

And Turkey is not European. Only 10% of turkey is in Europe. That does not make Turkey European. And no, Turkey does NOT follow European cultures, trust me. Have you ever even been to Turkey?? The only cities that follow European style are "istanbul" and Smyrna, and other in Asia minor. And you REALLY need to get an atlas.

turkeymap.jpg

And just for the record, Istanbul and Constatinople are both Greek names 2.gif

I believe that European cities are the most beautiful among others, and cities as Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Munchen, Firenze, Nice, Stocholm, Lisboa, Porto, Barcelona, Madrid, Prague, Budapest, Warzaw, Gdansk etc are awsome. As for Instanbul I think it's very beautiful near it's historical centre but outside it doesn't look so well as Athens too. i don't want to transpass American cities (NY, Buenos Ayres, Rio de Janeiro f.e.) but I believe the most beautiful city in the world for my opinion and only is Rome. I love it's skyline from Gianicolo or up from Piazza del Popollo to Villa Borghese. I love walking even in the modern neighbourhoods as Trastevere. And it is extraordinary how this city includes 2000 years of continuesly history and still produces culture. And it's not as huge as Paris or as small as Firenze. Also enough warm the half year to be easily aproached, and habited by people not as much disciplined as Germans but by far more cultivated then Greeks... It's just Perfect. I adore it.

You're Greek huh? Sounds like your afraid of being next to a NATO world power that kicked your asses in 1922.

"Other in Asia minor?" You mean big cities? Duh that's what I said.

Do you realise Istanbul continues east of the Bosphorus Striait?

Why do you think they call Anatolia Asia Minor? Because when your in Izmir or Ankara, it seems like you're in Europe.

eh, Ankara is NOT in asia minor! Asia minor is only the COASLINE of Asia which borders with Greece! Ankara is well into the Turkish mainland! Also, Only a small part of Constantinople is in Asia. It is regarded as a European city. And you clearly haven't been to Ankara if you think Ankara looks European...

And just for the record, Anatolia is used to describe the whole of Turkey, and not just the coastline on the Mediterranean sea 2.gif
