SC4 Deluxe - Game Crashing

I have been hunting around for a solution to my problem for a while so maybe this site will be of use....

I am working on the first city I started after installing the game.  I don't know the tile size of the region, but I've almost filled up the entire region.  I am now at the point where the game crashes constantly (30 seconds - 10 minutes after starting time on the region). 

Here are my specs:

Intel Dual Core 6600 @ 2.4 GHz

2.00 GB RAM

Primary HD: 70 GB WD Raptor SATA

I have tried setting the game to only use one of the cores on the processor.  I have tried running the game as an administrator.  I have tried modifying my page file.  I have updated the game completely.  I am well above the minimum requirements for the game, yet it continues to crash.  Are there any solutions to this or does Maxis under EA make a crap product?

Be sure you've installed the latest driver for your graphic-card. And may i also see your computer's spec ?

I'm experiencing the same problem. Only i'm working on my third region. The number of people living in my region are a little over 100.000, and i'm building on the largest tilesize.

Within a few minutes my game crashes and goes back to the desktop.

My specs are:

Intel Duo Core 1,7

2 GB Ram

Nvidia Geforce GT 9600

same here, also with a dual core and vista

it doesn't happen that often and is clearly related to memory in some way, it happens when i try to zooor move around too fast on big, developed cities or when i try to place particularly large lots like the space elevator. i don't really have a solution but it's very annoying

Zooming, and scrolling issues are usually related to the video card, and it's driver. Try software rendering in the game to see if that helps.

Thanks for your feedback, but it hassen't done the trick for me.

I've installed a new driver for my videocard, which is a Geforce 9600 GT, but still within 2 minutes the game crashes.

I guess it's not graphics he can't handle because my videocard is one of the best there is these days.

I've also looked at my plugins folder and deleted everything that i've installed since the problem occured.

The question is still.... what's the problem. I hope someone has other suggestions to solve this problem.

SC4 is a five year old game, and wasn't developed for the uber graphics cards we have now. Using a card with a really fast draw rate can make the game crash, as the card is demanding more than the game can give it.

The issue most likely isn't "too much power." SimCity 4 just uses what resources it needs. It's not like the graphics card tries to stuff all of it's resources down the poor program's mouth (or any program for that matter) (Of course, drivers can be a problem). Now, whether it be an Nvidia MX4000 or Nvidia 8800GTX OC, Simcity 4 will have problems when you do a bit too much zooming or scrolling.

I happen to have a Dual core CPU and vista, and the only times I've found Simcity 4 to crash on me is if I scroll and/or zoom too much in a small amount of time (and of course, crashing from problematic custom content).

The problem you described with the zooming/scrolling has happened before. This is how the problem started. Espcecially in the beginning when i just started the game and immediatly started scrolling.

No i don't even touch the mouse and it happens.

I also thought it had anything to do with expending my region from 4 x 4 (large tiles) to 6 x 4 (large tiles). I've deleted the extra 8 and turned it into it's original size. Still the same problem....

The strange thing is that it happens especially in one " tile". When i open another part of my city, it doesn't happen very often, and isn't very disturbing.

Anybody a suggestion??

See if you can post an exception dump file. SimCity 4 generates these when it crashes. They should be located in C:\Users\*you*\Documents\SimCity 4\Exception Reports. They are dated, so post the latest one that corresponds with one of those crashes.

I've looked for the map you're talking about but i don't have it. The thing is, that when it crashes, i don't get any reports. I simply go back to the desktop, and that's it.

I've reinstalled my game now, and cleaned a lot of plugins in the map. I hope it helps.

I've reinstalled my game to times. I also complete renewed my plugins folder, and organized it a lot better. Still the game crashes. Not after 2 minutes, but after 15.

So the problem is still not solved. Anybody with other suggestions?

I still don't have any exception reports. Does anybody have any idea what happened with the already posted exception reports from Defecto or crazyrasko? Maybe it applies to me also.

Exception reports are not much help, other than knowing the version of the SC4 game exe, and the amount of free memory. Both members need to install the game update patch, which will bring the version to 1.1.638.0 [or something close to that]. I am not sure what region 613 is, or if the patched version would be exactly 638.

Thanks tungston! Completely forgot about reinstalling the patch after installing SC4 on my new pc. I am now trying to run the game with no plugins at all too.

So far, no one has mentioned that advanced options such as Anti-aliasing need to be set to "application selected".  SC4 was created before any of the new stuff came out on graphics cards.  The fancy features that make the new cards into "Frame buffers" and other advanced stuff may confuse the game enough to provoke a crash.

As noted above, if you are running Deluxe, be sure your game version is up to 640.  That is up to the last patch published.  If you are runni9ng SC4 without rush hour, you should check to make sure you have all proper patches for that level.

Everyone has exception reports in the folder of the same name.  Only the first 20 or so lines are meaningful as we don't have a source or linkage map for the game.

My game crashed when I first got my dual core machine. The cure for me was as follows:

• Open the Windows Task Manager
• In the Processes tab right click on the SimCity line and scroll to "Set Priority". Check "High".
• Right click again and scroll to "Set Affinity" and disable one of your cores.
• Close the Task Manager and start the game.

Once I've done this I have no crashing problems.
