I'm a total $%&^! when it comes to customizing SimCity 4 (vanilla) and I have been searching around for a tutorial on getting started. I'm just looking to download some maps and then some buildings to make my games more worthwhile and real. I tried to download a few files but ended up with the dreaded brown box. So any help is appreciated or just linking me to a tutorial that I can understand. I'm starting from square one here.

Thanks

well actually nealos101, my tutorial is geared for users of Rushhour/Deluxe (as I feel vanilla just has too many issues to be enjoyable)

Randomhero: there are some bats and lots on the stex that will help your experience, but as I said above in my opinion, one of the best things you can do to enjoy the game is get rushhour or deluxe.

hope this helps...

I can easily acquire Rush Hour.  so let's assume that is what I will be using.

well if your going to be using rush hour/deluxe version then the first thing you need to make the game more realistic is the NAM which is the Network Addon Mod. Which adds loads of different functionality to the transport networks including new intersections, overpasses etc, and a new type of rail system the glr (ground light rail) which is a tram system for your cities.

After that if its some cool new building that you want then try searching the STEX for some of the following great BAT makers - CSX, BSC, BLS, NDEX, Pegasus; just to name a few.

I tried to download a few files but ended up with the dreaded brown box.

The problem here is that your missing some props (parts of the building lot which aremt supplied with the lot but in prop packs to make downloads smaller). So either you need to look at the readmes for the problem lots and download the necessary prop packs off the STEX; or do what alot of people do and download just about all the prop packs off the STEX (takes more time but maybe easier in the long run).

    hope some of this helps
