Best City Skyline

I think that the most beutiful cities are in Canada and Australia. they seem to have been better planned. Also, many in the US are nice. The problem with cities in places that grew really fast like China and UAE is that because demand is suddenly so high, they go into a building frenzy and so the skylines look too cluttered.

Its all about timing. The thing I especially like about Sydney, is how all the small buildings that are only midrise look like they were all built at the same time in the 1800's whilst all the skyscrapers look like theyve been added on gradually since the 70's and not the 60's, which often involved wacky designs that looked terrible later. 14.gif

And also - they have to have greenery. Huge green trees that are in parks around the CBD. They give the city that little magic touch that makes them look like they were planned with inhabitability in mind.

What is it with you lot and skyscrapers?

Nothing beats Prague, the traditional 'mother of all cities' (Latin: Praga Mater Urbum). It was one of the least damaged cities in the 2nd World War and has a skyline essentially unchanged for centuries. They don't call it the city of a Thousand Spires for nothing.

Now that's a city.

I must quote wikipedia to explain:

"A skyline is best described as the overall or partial view of a silhouette of a city's tall buildings and structures consisting of many skyscrapers in front of the sky in the background "

It is not just Skyscrapers that make up a Skyline, Oxfords Skyline is FANTASTIC yet its tallest habitable building is only 15 floors. The rest of the Skyline is made up of the Spires and Domes of the old University buildings. So called 'The Dreaming Spires'.

my hometown of bend, oregon has no skyline at all but i think its downtown is one of the best. its got older buildings from when it was first incorporated and its got many parks and cobblestone streets that gives it a small town feel even though the population is almost 100,000.

I'd have to say HK wins the "Breathtaking" award, especially with the light show, but not the best skyline. The reason? It consists of two things, glass and apartment blocks. Individually many of the buildings are beautiful. But there isn't much variety, as opposed to Chicago and New York, where there is over 100 years of different architectural styles. For example the Woolworth building, which will be 100 years old in 4 years time will be sitting next to Frank Ghery's new 21st century tower. There is everything from Art Deco to ugly black box to modern glass to Gothic masterpieces like the Woolworth, which to my knowledge are only found in Chicago and New York.

that small town feel isn't quite based on population as much as it is based on population density. I found a panoramic photo of Bend and I know exactly what you mean, but that small town feel is from sprawl, at least in this case. I used to live in the city of Hazel Park, Michigan. Granted, Hazel Park is an extremely dense (6,800/sqmi or something) city, but another characteristic is local architecture. A certain road in Hazel Park, John R., has many family owned businesses that are small and organized and built like those of a small town.

martin892 - HK is a huge forest of skyscrapers too.. it's what gives the city it's characteristics. Chicago's got 4 square miles of skyscraper yet it has a distinguished skyline among it. It's the same with Sao Paolo. Also, I dont mean to be a stinge, but there's an edit button for a reason :\

Thank you Hexagon1! I don't get this for me absurd fascination about skyscrapers. For me the most beautyful cities (or part of cities) is the scyscraperfree ones. Both looking at the skyline and at street level. For exempel Prague, Stockholm, central parts of Amsterdam and so on.

There are still some cities that retain green forest behind skyscrapers and one of those is Kuala Lumpur, where you can find a rainforest inside the city centre.

Boston, New York, Chicago, in no particular order.

Asian skylines are too unorganized and sloppy, and the pollution just destroys the whole "wow" factor because you can only see the buildings that are within a football field of you. As previously stated, the crazy demand for space in Asia means buildings are being produced faster than rabbits and there is no time to worry about asthetics. Of course, this is a guess, but i'm going to assume that the public and the city has less power with the developer over projects in Asia? In Boston, the developer is really a puppet to the city government and the local neighborhoods. This usually results in modest and somewhat boring buildings, but buildings that fit in the surrounds and usually provide for a pretty skyline.
