Aboard the ADS Bartek, a Ticonderoga class cruiser hovering about twenty-four miles off the coast, the final targeting coordinates are punched into the massive computer banks of the ship's AEGIS targeting system. A radio transmission comes in from the SH-60 circling the hill:

"Hammer, this is Anvil, target remains. Recommend follow up."

With final authorization from the bridge, a key is turned in the Combat Information Center. On the stern, a large door flips open and a plume of smoke erupts from the opening. As the 3,200 lb. missile streaks into the air, GPS and TERCOM navigation systems line up to guide the Tomahawk to its target. Fifty-four seconds later, the missile hits in a massive explosion that vaporizes any and all life on the hill.

"Hot damn!" hollers the Seahawk crew, who have been awaiting this moment for the past hour. "Alright guys, hang on, we're going in hot." The helicopter swoops down onto the hill, side doors flung open long before its wheels touch the blackened surface. Five Special Forces troopers and myself clamber out, gear and all, and secure the hilltop within sixty seconds of warhead detonation. My hill.

As you take the hill, a radio transmission is sent to an artillery battery located six miles to the west of the hill. The transmission is picked up by the communications arrays aboard the M1330 Stryker Command Vehicle and automatically relayed to each of the battery's twelve M109A6 Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzers.

Aboard each vehicle, the commander calls out, "Fire Mission, enemy infantry, at grid coordinates..." The coordinates are rattled off, every number punched into the howitzer's fire-control computer, which automatically aims the long barrel at an angle that it believes will allow the round to strike its target. Sensors at the tip of the barrel take in to effect wind speed and direction, humidity, temperature, barrel droop, and a score of other factors that could affect the shell's flight path. When all this is complete, the commander states, "Engage target with HE, fire one."

The first gun blasts out the High Explosive shell at a little over a thousand miles per hour, launching it into a high-arcing parabolic flight path. Long before the round strikes, the fire control computers have taken into effect the differences between the predicted path and the actual one, thanks to a small transmitter within the shell itself. By the time the shell hits, the modified coordinates and data have been fed to the other eleven guns, who all fire at the same time, ensuring a time-on-target strike.

Back at the hill, the first round streaks overhead with an unmistakable whistling noise. Larks looks into the air, his gut knowing what's about to happen but his mind not yet comprehending it. He's still gazing into the air as the second salvo arrives on target.

A total of thirty-five rounds saturate the hill top. Most are contact-detonated, but a handful are proximity fused. These detonate twenty feet over the hill, showering its surface in lethal shrapnel.

After waiting for the fire to cease, me and my men move in. The hill is secured. My hill.
