Update 1

From Humble Beginnings

Introduction

As some of you may know, I recently took it upon myself to try to make a City Journal. My first attempt was named Apollo, and it was a Science Fiction City Journal that could actually happen to the human race at some point. My second attempt was Woodland Valley and it went much better then Apollo, but after three updates, I was unsatisfied with the results. Both of the City Journals were ended and are currently cluttering up the forums and they will soon be at the bottom of the pile. I have recently asked a moderator to delete them for me and we will see where that goes. But now, after ending those two City Journals, aquiring new skills in Infranview, and downloading new content, I give you a new City Journal. This City Journal will document the history of a fictional island, and you, the viewers, will help make some of the decisions that will make or break this civilization. This City Journals is... Woodland Island.

 A Major Discovery

It was a simply beautiful day, the sky was clear, the sun was bright, and the seagulls were chirping high above John William Palmer's head. Palmer, a sea captain that became a millionaire after taking part in the California Gold Rush, was sailing his private boat off the coast of San Francisco, a city that had grown significantly after thousands of treasure seekers had come when gold was found. Of course, not all of the treasure seekers found gold, and Palmer was one of the lucky ones. He had managed to find enough gold so that he was able to sell it for two million dollars, quiet a large sum of money back then. So now, after the Gold Rush, and after California's seperation from Mexico and its acceptence into statehood, Palmer steered his boat while staring ahead into the open sea. But suddenly he noticed it wasn't any longer open sea, it was... land! As he realized that he saw land ahead, Palmer's eyes widened and he gasped. Land! How he could he be seeing land when he was sailing away from California and towards the open sea? What Palmer with all his money and intelligence didn't realize, was that he had just made one of the most important discoveries in human history.

 Onto the Island

Palmer started to sail his ship to the island, not caring whether or not he knew where he was heading. When he came close enough to the island that the water was to shallow for his sailboat to continue, he took out a small canoe and rowed to the island. As he stepped on solid ground for the first time in quiet a while, he was amazed at the natural beauty of this island. There were lush forrests, gray boulders, and grassy greens. He took to pictures of this landscape with a camera, and since this was Circa 1850, the photo's came out in black and white.

Palmer then rowed back to his sailboat and consulted a map that was accurate for this period in time. The map revealed that the very island Palmer was near was not yet known to man. Palmer then knew that he had made a great discovery and sailed back to San Francisco. He then called upon a construction crew to follow him back onto the island and construct a few buildings there.

First, they constructed a ferry terminal to allow people to get onto the island easily.

RockyPlains-Apr9001217436050.jpg

Next, they constructed a small power source and an aquafier.

RockyPlains-Nov1001217436416.jpg

Then, they built a small buisness district consisting of a saloon and a hotel for tourists and workers that would soon inhabit the island.

RockyPlains-Jan9011217437096.jpg

Also, they constructed some residential homes that were soon populated.

RockyPlains-Sep12011217437547.jpg

With the new residential homes, it was decided that a general store was needed so one was made near the buisness district.

Last, some more homes were built by the construction crew.

Finally here's an overview shot of the village that John William Palmer named Rocky Plains on the land called Woodland Island.

The End

That's it for this update. Remember, comments, questions, suggestions, and constructive critism are encouraged.

Next time on Woodland Island: The economy booms.

The following are downloads that I got from the STEX, the PLEX, and the LEX:

Mods: I downloaded the Meadowshire Terrain Mod, the Gray Ploppable Rocks Mod, Western Larches from the Colubus Terrain Mod Tree Controller, and the Network Addon Mod.

BATs and Lots: I downloaded Bats and Lots by BLaM, BSC, NDEX, Pegasus, SFBT, and a few other designers.

Side Note: For those of you who are confused, Woodland Island is a country and Rocky Plains is a city.

    Update 1-A
    Time for Replies

    Replies

Anarchy0029: Thank you. I feel the photos add a little bit of realism to Woodland Island that would be missing without them.

Mayorbk: I'm glad you enjoyed the beginning of Woodland Island.

Jacqulina: I'm happy that you enjoyed my City Journal and I hope to see you back here soon.

Fabsies55: I will be using colored pictures next update, I only used black and white photos because that update was Circa 1850. By the way, no offense, but try to use proper grammer next time you reply to Woodland Island, I could barely understand what you were saying.

Twenty20: I'm happy to see you came to Woodland Island after replying to my older City Journal, Woodland Valley.

Smarty218: Thanks, I'm currently working on some expansion for my next update.

Lucky7: I agree with everything you said and I hope you come back to my City Journal.

Manubeas: Welcome back. As you can see some things have changed since you have been gone. I have finally been able to add a link to your City Journal in my signature without getting in trouble or messing it up and I have started a new City Journal. Also a few new City Journals have been opened and Chain Island has closed (I never posted there but I kind of lurked around). That's about it, I wish you luck on your City Journal and thanks for replying (and adding me to your signature)!

Peachpit580: Thank you for the comment and yes, I am very satisfied with Woodland Island.

Theirishnintendonerd: Looks like posting a link to my City Journal in chat has paid off. Thank you for visiting.

Edmonton_stinks: Yes, Woodland Island has come along way from its humble beginnings.

Thank you for visiting everybody and it will be a little while longer before I can update again, after all, I am bringing my city through about 160 years of history.

yea sorry i've had that a lot.

yeah. i never read anyone intro's or anything because i can be bothered and it wastes my time so i only look at the pictures.

also put your city detail on high in the options menu i think.

because as i can see, your like driveways and like chairs and trees are gone from parks and houses.

    Update 2
    Modern Woodland Island

    Replies

Manubeas: I'm glad you liked the pictures, one of the main reasons I started a new City Journal was my new abilities in the art of photoshopping. Also, you did get the biggest reply, I felt I owed you for being so kind on your City Journal, and I wanted to welcome you back to Simtropolis. On a side note, I was wondering that if my City Journal got bigger, would you be interested in putting embassies for our cities in La République-Unie de la banlieue and Woodland Island (For example, in Three Mesa's you would place an embassy to Woodland Island and in Rocky Plains I would place an embassy to  La République-Unie de la banlieue.)?

KingTitan: Thank you, I figure my City Journal must be pretty good to get a positive response from an official City Journal critic

Fabsies55: Apology accepted, and I don't blame you for not reading the introduction on City Journals, especially mine. Unfortunetly for some viewers, I write long introductions and try to focus on the storyline in some updates, thus making the update longer and harder to read. On a different subject, thank you for your advice, I managed to regain some of my base and overlay textures along with props by putting the resolution and details on high.

Sedimenjerry: Thank you for your comment. The island has yet to be shown (Mainly because I did not terraform before starting Woodland Island), but I can tell you it is off the coast of California. Also, I will be showing some city stats in this update.

    Evillions: Thank you.

    Introduction

Hello everyone, and welcome to the second installment of Woodland Island. Today I will be givng you a virtual tour of sorts of modern Woodland Island. It hasn't changed much since the dicovery of the island and there is still only a relatively small amount of residents living there. So here is modern Woodland Island, enjoy.

Summary of the Past 158 Years

Not much happened on Woodland Island until recently. Sure the population grew, but the inhabitents stayed  around the Rocky Plains area, not expanding much onto the rest of the island. On the other hand, industry on Woodland Island boomed, and after it was discovered there was oil beneath the feet of Woodland Island citizens, an oil pier and refinery were set up in Rocky Plains. It was around the time that the refinery was built that Woodland Island declared its independence from the United States of America. The United States, not wanting to cause an international incident, quietly stepped back from the island and let Woodland Island have its own government. It was agreed upon by the leaders of Woodland Island that their citizens shall live under a representative democracy. A president was voted in, and his name was Michael Wilson Harrison. His first act as president was to add John William Palmer, the person who discovered Woodland Island and who had recently passed away, to the list of presidents. This act was approved by the people of Woodland Island and their infatuation with Harrison continued until 1980 when he was pronounced dead in his home. At the point in Woodland Island history there was no Vice-President so the next president to be elected was George Washington Nelson, and he is still president today.

    Update 3
    Neighborhood Renovation

    Replies

Manubeas: Apology accepted (Even though you didn't really have to apologize). Here is a STEX upload that looks like an embassy, it is called the Government Building. I'll place one in my city when you give the word. By the way, I hope it's okay if I "borrowed" an idea from La République-Unie de la banlieue and put it in my City Journal. If you have any problems with me using PEGs Random Seasonal Trees to seperate my neighborhoods like you do in La République-Unie de la banlieue, Private Message me.

    Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the third update of Woodland Island, my City Journal. Today I will be showing some pictures of major renovation and changes in Rocky Plains, the only city on Woodland Island.

    Major Renovation

As you can see by the following picture, the industrial district and Industrial Route 1 did not change.
    RockyPlains-Mar14561219688658.jpg

Hovever, most of the city changed as evidenced by this photo. As you can clearly see, all the trees in Rocky Plains were destroyed as a result of more development proposals. This action caused an uprise of envirormental awareness in Rocky Plains, and soon an enviromental committee was created. Their first motion was to plant Seasonal Trees around the developed parts of the city.
    RockyPlains-Mar14561219688429.jpg

The next photo shows the presidents home, sitting across from the Hotel Zaza.
    RockyPlains-Mar14561219688607.jpg

Another renovation in Rocky Plains was the moving of the commercial district from the roundabout to a road that was named Ocean Boulevard (The Hotel Zaza also sits along this road).
    RockyPlains-Mar14561219688472.jpg

As a result of the commercial district being moved, the rondabout quickly filled in with residential homes.
    RockyPlains-Mar14561219688539.jpg

Here is the last picture for today, a shot of the whole residential area.
    RockyPlains-May2571219688789.jpg

    The End

That's it for this update. Remember, comments, questions, suggestions, and constructive critism are encouraged.

Next time on Woodland Island: Alot of development.

The following are downloads that I got from the STEX, the PLEX, and the LEX:

BATs and Lots: I downloaded Bats and Lots by BLaM, BSC, NDEX, Pegasus, SFBT, and a few other designers.

Well anyways. If you want some more rural or suburban buildings. Look for Simgoobers, he has a lot of what you need their. And look for SOMY's and Pegs coal and oil stuff. You might like them.
