So the GTX 280 looks out of my price range, and the GTX260 vs 4870 performance is almost equal but the 4870 is cheaper

so after using nVIDIA for so long, im considering shifting to a 4870 soon

any feedback on issues with SC4 and ATI cards? coz im under the impression that most ATI users have problems with SC4

thanks for your inputs

I can't speak for the newer series, but I can say that all previous ATI cards don't run SC4 very well in hardware mode (I have used an x800xl and an x1900xt). Especially with shadows enabled.

I am pleased that recently the catalyst drivers seem to have gpu scaling working. For such a long time that feature just didn't work for me.

DoomyDoomyDoomDoom is quite right about ATI cards not working well w/ SC4 in hardware rendering mode. I have a 1900GT and will upgrade shortly to either a 4870 or 4870x2 (dual GPU) when it comes out in mid-August. I think that more recent ATI cards work well w/ SC4 though. For price-performance, ATI has the lead over NVIDIA.

Well, my 3870 on vista x64 works fine with SC$. I've had no problems, except for a few messed up textures, but this is only when dragging or during explosion animations.

ATI graphic cards tend to overheat. The ATI Moblitiy Radeon x1400 graphic card that my laptop has is fine with me. The only common graphic problems I noticed when playing SC4 is when dragging something while moving the screen, and sometime the background grids show through the ground (I find it very annoying).

X1900XT works great here.. no detectable problems of any sort.. running in hardware rendering (on XP)

thanks guys, so i guess its a risk i might take when the time comes for me to choose between a GTX260 and a 4870 15.gif funny this is neither cards (nor my 8800GT) get any workout in SC4 LOL but of course i play other modern games. Im really tempted to switch to the 4870 due to the price/performance but im afraid my favorite game (SC4) would have problems

SC4BOY, do you have shadows enabled? With shadows enabled, the game becomes extremely stuttery when moving around. If that's not the case for you then I would be interested in hearing more about your setup.

If you change something and it stops working reasonably, stop using it! lolz No I have an absolutely standard install except for SC4 I don't use any "advanced modes".. the game was designed WAAAY before any of those came out.. consequently its graphics don't use them (it literally isn't in the graphics.. also its not "3D" or anything else fancy.. not even multi-threaded) You can do this for SC4 and not affect any other games.. And no matter how fancy your pc setup is, if you keep piling on the mod's and custom lots and graphic details and large windows, etc.. you WILL find a point where your system will be dragged kicking and screaming to its knees.. 2.gif
