For some reason when I opened Sim City 4 today this is what I saw.

What really frustrates me, is that the SAME exact thing happened to me on the SAME tile. As you see the pop. is still there, but not the city. Can anyone help?

It also looks like you're missing the city in the bottom right corner of the picture as well, but no, I have no idea how this could happen. I've accidentally deleted city tiles from regions and couldn't get them back. Maybe, when you re-render the region, save a copy of the city tiles in a seperate folder as a backup, and when(if) it deletes itself again, at least you'll have another copy

That happened to me too once. I guess it has something to do with some nasty plugins. Have you recently installed anything to your plugin-folder? If so, remove it. Can you load the concerned city?
I just removed the faulty plugins, reload the city and voila, all sort out. Good luck!

This same thing happened to me at least 5 times and I have NO clue why. It sucks losing a huge city to a bug. I've installed no addon or anything of the sort. Can anyone help?

A very similar thing happened to me and I managed to fix it.  Still not sure why it happened though.  In my experience it didn't show the population of the missing city, just "New City" when clicking on the region view.

Here's what I found...

In the my Regions folder was a subfolder called 'Downloads".  In there I found the .sc4 files for the three missing cities.

Initially I just  copied them to the correct region folder, but they still failed to show and when I checked again the files had automatically transferred back to the Downloads folder.

I then used trial and error to work out what number tiles the missing cities were.  I deleted the corresponding "New City XX" files from the correct Region folder, moved the correct city files to the Region folder and hey presto, it worked.  The hardest thing was discovering which number in the New Cities the tiles related to.  To do this I just removed the new city files in batches until I narrowed it down.

There appears to be a logic as the numbers pretty much ran diagonally accross the region, with the 50-59 range being diagonally across the middile (or thereabouts).

So, maybe worth checking if your missing cities have been moved to a Downloads directory and try this.

I hope it helps some people after all the help I've had from here!

This does seem to happen sometimes, and as andhow mentioned, the cities in question might be found in the Downloads folder within the Region folder. The game might have 'placed' the cities there. However, before going through all the guessing-and-checking, the 'Import' function could be used to try to replace the missing cities . This will allow the cities from the Downloads folder to be imported into the game.

Just a thought...
