High Resolution Photo Mode

I bring you an idea for the next generation of City Journals

49.gif

I want to suggest having a tool which allows you to generate a screenshot/photo of the whole city on a detailed zoom level at a very high resolution. Thus, instead of having to take multiple screenshots for CJs and such, one could generate these citywide high resolution screenshots which would be saved to the photofolder of the game.

Thus one would have a say 24000 x 16000 pixel screenshot or so, that one could upload so the whole city could be browsed by CJ readers. Very convenient 4.gif .

This tool could be in-game or external. It shouldnt be to hard to realize, i think. It simply needs to load the city at that resolution separatly and generate-save a screenshot.

Another idea would be to be able to videorecord a game session, but then, there is already tools for that out there. I also believe i suggested other ways of sharing ones city and stats online in my original "Online Ideas" compilation which i know that Monte Cristo got.

In either case, however it may be, good luck MC and I really wish you will suceed with this simulator.

As a member from Cities XL's official forums, I think it should go one dimension further, and create screen shots that are vector graphics, ones that you can view in Adobe Illustrator or Acrobat and Reader, which I use a lot. Perhaps a good file type should not be lossy, like the PNG extension.

so basically something like region census, only for the city itself? great idea...

but don't post it in the SCS topic cuz noone plays it :-P

EDIT: ok, busted, it's XL. Great idea anyways. I hope MC takes knowledge of it. Nevertheless:

pass it over to the SC4 threads so wounagaine can put his holy hands onto the project ;-)

That would be awesome, but still the loading time for the CJ's would be horrendous, and Photobuket wouldn't allow picture sizes like that to.

there's more free picture hosts than the bucket, that even allow bigger file sizes ;-)

I like the Idea but the loading time would be massive for something 24000 x 16000, even if its on your computer never mind over the internet. I'd say a Hyper-res shot of a city should be no more than 5000x3500 or somthing.

Heres something I made a few years ago thats 4087 X 2955. Takes about 30 seconds to load for me, but a few years ago when I had a slower connection it did take about 5 minutes!

    Well made El-Burro.

You are probably correct about the loading times, but maybe we can figure out a solution for that... i mean there are thumbnails, we would not be posting the huge files in the posts directly, but it would be nice to have it available.

Lets push the limits 2.gif .

And yes, it would be sort of like region census, I didnt know about that software until some month ago actually *blush* .

If you can constrain yourself to 6000x6000, you can put it at maplib.net and use a Google Maps interface to navigate, and soom in and out.

There's also a program called Google Image Cutter, using Java for the app, and the Google Maps API for displaying the pictures. I haven't tested it since I can't get it to work on the Mac, but it might be useful in addition to such a tool.

(Burro, let's see your pic in the Google Maps interface!)
