Hey lewellan, just a little question for ya, are the planners checking into the whole subway development for stimulating future growth? cause if they are they should definately consider this the Golden Age of Technology since in some cities, subways were the way to go.9.gif

News in Three of Our Cities
There are going to be some changes in our three coastal cities in the north. The following newspaper headline will give you a good idea what it's about.

Nice.  Sounds like a pretty extensive upgrade for these three cities.  Can't wait to see the end results.

    PEG's Waterfront Enhancements
The following posts are all going to feature the incredible waterfront enhancements by Pegasus. The work he has gone to has ensured that waterfronts don't need to be drab.

I am going to use just about all of them. So keep your eyes open, and hopefully I can induce you to using these little gems!

And a special thanks to Pegasus for making this possible!

    Eppel Park in Lancaster
Our first shoreline improvement project takes us to Lancaster. This improvement uses Pegusus' Trail Park Waterfront Enhancement.

    /idealbb/files/Spot---Lanc_Only.jpg

After acquiring the funds, the city of Lancaster built Eppel Park. The park is a long, narrow park that runs from the Digby Ferry Terminal to the northern city boundary. The citizens are very pleased with their new park.

Here is a few of the park from afar.

    /idealbb/files/Shore_Lanc_Main.jpg

How did things look before the park was built? Well, it was a bit of a mess. This is the area just to the north of the ferry terminal (the view is rotated).

    /idealbb/files/Shore_Lanc_Before1.jpg
    /idealbb/files/Shore_Lanc_After11.jpg

And moving a little further north, we can see a marked improvement.

A Detailed Look at Eppel Park
Like every other place in Digby, there's always a little more under the surface if you take a closer look. The new park is going over extremely well. Property values have already started to rise!

The park is even open during the night. In keeping with the Take Back the Night movement in Digby, city authorities try to use non-offensive lighting in parks and streets. Our new waterfront park is a great example. There's just enough light to keep pedestrians from stumbling over the railing into the ocean.

    /idealbb/files/Shore_Lanc_Moonlight-Stroll.jpg

Here is a look at the far north perimeter of the park.

    /idealbb/files/Shore_Bulldoze.jpg

Of course, there still is that odd floural phenomena...

    /idealbb/files/Shore_Lance_Palms1.jpg

And like all places in Digby, Lancaster has its personalities...

    /idealbb/files/Shore_Lanc_Mailbox.jpg

You'd think Mrs. Dilly would simply be happy with the nice, new view she has out her front window...but you know people!

Well, that's it for Eppel Park. We'll be back again sometime, I'm sure, but get ready, because we are headed across Hampton Strait to Lancaster's sister city, Wentworth! They've got a little project of their own going on!

Hey! I've noticed something SPECTACULAR occur, Lewellan222 has the MOST VIEWED CITY JOURNAL EVER!!!!!!! I was just looking at the old Cjs and i noticed a trend, no matter how old, long, or exciting a Cj was, Digby surpassed it! Digby has enticed so many viewers to come back to the warm, down-to-earth feeling of Digby, that I think that DIGBY DESERVES AN AWARD!!!!!!

So if if you think so, Hassle Administraters Until They Do, or, H.A.U.T.D. has been started!!3.gif3.gif3.gif

    Lancaster-Wentworth Refresher
Before we scoot across the strait and visit Wentworth, let's just have a quick recap of the relationship between these two cities, and why we call them the twin-cities, even though they are separated by water.

    /idealbb/files/Spot---Lanc-Went2.jpg

Both of these cities were founded at the same time, about 1815. Their relationship is an interesting one.

Wentworth, on Williams Island, was named after Lord Edmund Wentworth, who owned most of the land on the island at the turn of the eighteenth century. It was founded by Edmund's cousin, Walter Ellington (watch for Ellington Street and Ellington Park a little later). The town of Wentworth had a lucrative fishing and shipbuilding industry, but being on the island, had limited resources of mastwood and no iron at all.

Lancaster, across the strait on the mainland, was named by its founder, the Earle of Lancaster Simon Dallywater. Lancaster was surrounded by tall pines suitable as mastwood, and had a fervent mining industry, with foundries that produced high-demand iron.

Each of these towns had what the other needed. So a lucrative trading relationship was established immediately. Further, the water in Hampton Strait at the exact point between these towns was abnormally calm most of the time, make it good for crossing more often than the other channels in the area.

So the two towns had a perfect symbiotic relationship right from the start. The towns were intertwined in trade, culture, and family, and have been known as the Twin Cities since anyone can remember!

Here is a look at the cities as they appear today.

    /idealbb/files/Lanc_Went_z1_02.jpg

Okay, that's our history lesson for today. Now let's have a look at the new development on Wentworth's neglected waterfront!

    Wentworth's Waterfront
As mentioned before, the shoreline improvements in these sections include judicious use of BAT structures (and some lots, too). These are the work of Simtropolite Pegasus. This time, we'll be featuring his boardwalk and pier stuff...so here's the eye-catching intro graphic...

    /idealbb/files/PEG's.jpg

And now to Wentworth. Here is an overview of the shoreline development.

    /idealbb/files/Went_Main_Shore.jpg

The before and after pictures will give an overview. The view will now be rotated. We'll start on the southern shoreline of Wentworth (see the mini-map inset).

    /idealbb/files/Went_before01.jpg
    /idealbb/files/Went_after01.jpg

    And now the northern portion.

    /idealbb/files/Went_before02.jpg
    /idealbb/files/Went_after02.jpg

Starting from the south, let's take a closer look. Wentworth City Beach is the largest municipal beach in Digby. Here it is.

    /idealbb/files/Went_Beach.jpg

Just to the north of that, is Ellington Park (remember we talked about that before).

    /idealbb/files/Went_Ellington.jpg

Moving north from Ellington Park, we reach the ferry terminal (gateway to Lancaster!), and then another walkway that leads to Sugar Bowl Park (which, by the way, was always there and remains unchanged).

    /idealbb/files/Went_Terminal.jpg

Finally, after we pass a few houses, we end up at the Piers and Gull Beach. This is a very popular area, and is almost always full of people!

    /idealbb/files/Went_Pier.jpg

And a closer look at Gull Beach and the Piers reveals some interesting details...

    /idealbb/files/Went_Beach2.jpg

Okay, that's all for now. Tomorrow, we'll look at Wentworth's waterfront again in even more detail.

Where are the hotels? You would think that big hotel companies would be attracted to the largest beach in the area.

    Hotels, you ask? Ummm...
This one is across the street from Ellington Park. It's old though, and will likely come down one day.

A Closer Look at Wentworth's Shoreline
In the previous section we looked at the general state of the Wentworth shoreline. The town spent lots of money on this work, which included considerable landfill and the removal of old cottages and abandoned shacks.

Now it's time to take a closer look at what goes on along this shoreline. It didn't take long for residents to make use of their new playground.

    Remember Ellington Park?

    /idealbb/files/Went_Close_Ellington1.jpg

By the way, that little bus stop statistic is a hint of a much broader report on the state of mass transit in Digby (which isn't much). The six main cities have bus service, but that's about it. We'll talk more about that later.

Let's head over the city beach and check out the goings-on in the wee hours of the morning...
    /idealbb/files/Went_Beach_Night1.jpg

Of course, Wentworth will one day need a police presence of some sort. There are two levels of policing in Digby: city police forces like in Granton, and the Digby Regional Police Force, which is much like a country sheriff department, which polices all the little towns and highways. As these cities grow, their policing needs will grow also.

As we've mentioned earlier, Lancaster and Wentworth are connected by a ferry service. It's the only way people can get to the mainland from Williams Island (unless they fly, but who can afford that!) So there is always something going on down by the ferry terminal. Here's the latest...
    /idealbb/files/Went_Close_Ferry1.jpg

    Speaking of nudity...
    /idealbb/files/Went_NudeBeach1.jpg

People are just as prude in Digby as any other North American city (especially on the east coast)...our European counterparts don't worry about this kind of thing.

Boardwalks are an attractive way to provide people with a space on which to walk and play. Not everyone likes the sandy beach, but all Digbyers love the ocean air, so boardwalks are for everybody! They are fairly cost effective, and require little maintenance.
    /idealbb/files/Went_Close_NorthEnd.jpg

Some of these people are lucky enough to live right across the street from the boardwalk. We can only imagine what will happen to property values there!

Even at night, the Piers and Boardwalks are a great place to spend time with friends and family.

    /idealbb/files/Went_Pier_Night1.jpg

And that's it for now! Come back soon!
