At first you demand is extremly low and there is a very low sucsses rate when you start at the main city. I start at the outskirts and move in.

Rate of having a good starter city: 30%

Rate of having a good city made in about 5 days into playing the region: 75%

A balanced starter town/suburb on the outskirts will help you balance RCI demand when you specialize areas later on as well.  The higher the population you have as a whole, the more play you have in when demand goes positive or negative.

I build from the downtown out, which makes it easier to balance the appearance of the region and plan transportation better. If you start at the downtown, remember to keep the industrial hubs away from the downtown and give them fast access (mass transit, passenger rail etc,) which you'll need in the downtown anyway, and it's easier to build it while your city is young rather than later.

I agree, and start a tiny city before going for the huge megalopolis.

All major cities started out as small village towns.

However, it was something very unique about their asthetic or economic features that caused them to become big cities.

Although you should plan the infrastructure while the city's young, never implement the next step until it's absolutely necessary.

Take your time with it too. Don't rush the city's growth or you will encounter trouble later on in the game.

I typically start doing infrasructure in downtown and building outwards so I have the base for development. Once I get my main expressways and railways built then I do as others and actually start my city building on the outskirts so that I can grow demand and region pop before getting to downtown.

I start by building almost all farmland interspersded with small cities.  Then I start growing the cities large (chosing one to be the 'main' city).  The main city becomes my downtown and the rest grow into suburbs.  I add increasingly more expensive infrastucure as the cities grow and can afford it.  I find this method gives me the most realistic looking region.

What ever method you choose, have patience and let your creative juices flow.  But most of all, have fun.

I usually start by building a small city, then as the physical area and population grows, I begin to reorganize with "Highways" and one-way roads. In most of my cities, that I plan to turn into urban areas, I plan out a grid ahead of time for the realism of the intercity. The drawback to my urban planning is that I rarely have cities that I don't have to do some heavy modification to place Highways, but I have gotten around that by placing my avenues in between the grid roads, then just replace the avenue with a highway and the grid roads become frontage roads. I also plan out mass-transit from the beginning, with busstops, monorail, and subway/GLR integrated into the city as I build. Some of my newer cities, however, I am building them from the beginning with their Highways taken into account, and others I'm trying to keep rural.

I often build cities in the Region at random, but work on one, then move to its neighbor in one direction or another, and so on, until I feel like starting another stand-alone city or to start back at the neighbor of the first city.
