You could try running chkdsk. Also, running memtest from a kubuntu or knoppix disk would test your RAM....Do I find this stuff on the internet? If so Ill check it out

Your issue sounds like either the OS is in a really bad shape or you have hardware issues... I cant imagine there been too many major issues as the computer has no really been used much, only been on the internet for 2 weeks!

Im going to try the above anyway and ill also double check I have the latest Directx installed...ill let you know how it goes

many thanks

Have you had any success? I have the same computer as you, and I think I"m having the same problem. After the game installs and I try to start it, I get the blue screen. when the computer restarts, I try to start the game again, another blue screen. I'm currently working on the tips that have been mentioned in this thread.

mwacuk - are you still having problems?

I had very similar issues to you - game installed, then memory dump and crashed. It was my driver for the graphics card. I've got the 945 not the 950. Go to intel and upgrade from there, the drivers are more up to date than windows.

hope this helps!!

I've still got problems but the game runs now, just a few srcolling issues and crashes sometimes on zooming.

7th Legend--

Vista uses DirectX, but it should come with at least DirectX 9, I think. You can check for yourself. In your start menu, go to All Programs-->accessories-->command prompt. This will open up a DOS-like program. When it opens type dxdiag and hit enter. The screen that appears should give you lots of information about your computer including the version of DirectX.

I would add that just because an integrated graphics card worked well on XP doesn't mean you should expect the same performance under Vista. As has already been mentioned, Vista is a bit slower than XP. You'll definitely want to turn off as many background tasks as possible. I do that even with a dedicated graphics card for any Maxis game.

BTW, I've always had random crashes with SC4 under XP and Vista on several different computers.  I've learned to save often. 4.gif

Hmm i have this problem too, game is running slow with my new computer with Vista Ultimate. OS if fresh installed, i have Intel C2D E6750 @ 2720 MHz, 4 Gb RAM and Nvidia N260GTX graphic card, so im wondering why the hell game is running like ***** compared to my old pc wich was something like this: athlon xp 2100+, 1,5gb ram and geforce 4. And windows xp. So im pretty sure the problem is vista.

UPDATE:  I got Sim City 4 working on my Vista.  It's working real good too.  The only problem I have is that sometimes I will crash to Windows in mid game.  But that doesn't happen too often.  The game runs as fast or faster than when it was on my XP system.

Ok so what was my solution?  In game, Under Graphic Options - Renderer - I choose "software".  It was on Hardware.  That's it.  Maybe this will help some of you so I'm passing it along.

Thanks everyone agin for your help.

I recently purchased a new system and cannot update to EP1 update1, it says it completed the update but never goes beyond 0%. Whenever, I go back to the update it says "We have detected version 1.1.610.0 on your computer"; my system configuration is (I am logged in as administrator):

    System mfr/model: Gateway GT5694

    Processor: AMD Phenom X4 (Quad-core) 1.8 GHz

    Bus speed: 3200 MHz

    Installed memory: 4 GB

Installed video: ATI Radeon HD 3200 w/256 MB

    Operating system: Windows Vista (64-bit)

    System security suite: Norton 360

Does anyone know what I should do to remedy this?

Perhaps, it is your integrated graphics card that causes the problem? Also, if your virtual memory is very low, you may experience a slow and choppy game play. Another one is the drivers for your machine. If they are already outdated, they may cause your graphics to load improperly. So, in conclusion, make sure that your virtual memory is good. Its size must be enough. Make sure that you have updated drivers; and you must also check if there are any unimportant tasks running.

Software rendering mode seems to make it run faster. At least, that's what I use, and I have no performance problems.
