I am beginning to build a region based on Toronto, Canada.

 

Here are some initial shots:

Hey, awsome, i live and toronto and tried many times to make a region of it but was too lazy.

I'm looking foward to see how this is going to end up! And it better look realistic!
Like the highrise buildings only where they are supposed to be, for example finch/yongue and the downtown.

Yes!!!!! Toronto finally gets the recognition it deserves!

 

I've lived in Toronto all my life, and I have to say that it's the world's greatest city (but New York is amazing to visit too) so I'm behind you all the way on this one.

 

I too have tried to make Toronto. In SC3K I did a large section of Etobicoke (roughly the square between Eglington, Lakeshore, West Mall, and Jane Street, if you know the area) in infinite detail. I plopped all the houses and backyards by hand!

 

If you're using the same map that I found (I think I downloaded it from Simtropolis), it's interesting to note that the city divisions in the region correspond exactly to the gridlines on the MapArt Toronto map. It makes it easy to place roads and such.

 

Are you planning to plop it all or grow it? If you're plopping, I made some RCI ploppables on the LEX that might come in handy.

Update:

A look at the region with some buildings:

 

Next is the first look at Skydome and the CN Tower.  I think it looks pretty good!

 

Now an updated look at the Union Station area and downtown.  I used the Bank of China for First Canadian Place, Bank of America as the Scotia Bank Tower, and Korea Life Building as the TD/Canada Trust Tower.

Is nobody going to respond to this? I want to know if you like the direction I'm going with this? Is it "centre of the universe enough?

Looking good so far. Are you going to try to develop the whole region (suburbs, etc) realistically? Right now there is just a hard boundary between city and wilderness.

I've never been to Toronto, but I find it interesting how you've put dirty industry along the water right in downtown. There are lots of cities that have this because the old industry grew up where the people were -- downtown. It's only as commercial development takes over that the industry moves out, but still leaves its ugly remains to scar up the downtown area.

Nashville, TN had this problem until a few years ago, when they tore most of the old industry out to put in the Titan's Coliseum. There's still a little old industry still there, but I'm not sure how much is functional versus abandoned.

I plan on building up the whole region eventually...all the various boroughs...This map covers pretty much the entire "megacity" from Etobicoke to Scarborough.

I've been plopping some of the small shops and landmark buildings. But I'm letting the simulator build up most of it...we'll see how it looks. I might end up using the plop mod to build up some areas.

The old port of Toronto is still an eyesore. There have been several plans put forward to redevelop that area. They recently kick out the homeless people from "tent city" but for now it's not much to look at. Part of the 2008 Olympic bid (that went to Bejing) was to redevelop part of the old port into the Olympic Village, but that's not happening right now.

For me the center of the universe is Paris, France, but I still appreciate your city. Keep up! It's very good so far.

I love Toronto, I live by Niagara Falls but I got to Toronto pretty often so I know what you're talking about. Too bad the map couldn't keep going past Scarborough east or Etobicoke West but I guess tehy are the boundaries of the Megacity. Can't wait to see some more pics. By the way, what lots are you creating for this city??

I work downtown and live in the 'burbs...I know Toronto all too well...I've been doing some observing on my GO train rides in the last few days and figuring out relative building sizes (low, med, high density), zoning, etc.

I'm not making any original lots for myself. Too much time and effort. I do have a life

For now I'm using the Seoul soccer stadium as Skydome, a arena lot from the LEX from the ACC, and some landmark buildings (with jobs) as some of the very large downtown buildings. Did you know that First Canadian Place (Bank of Montreal building) is the 28th tallest office building in the world at 298 m? I'm using the Bank of China landmark (with jobs) for FCP, Bank of America is the Scotia Bank Tower (looks pretty similar - red stone, but the Scotia is taller), and the Korea Life Building as the TD/Canada Trust Tower. I'm thinking of plopping the big brown Stage 8 from the Euro tileset...it looks more like the real thing.

Seems like there's a spate of city recreations lately. I just hope people carry them through. In the past, it seems like people have had problems or gotten frustrated and given up on producing the final product.

Anyway, never been to Toronto, but this looks really interesting and I wish you the best of luck.

Excellent! I am very homesick for my hometown of Toronto. The rest of Canada thinks we're arrogant...but hey, it's hard not to be when you're from the best city in the world Not that the city I currently reside in isn't...errr...well...Ok. (No offence to my fellow Edmontonians).

Anyway, lookin' good. I like how you've done the CNE. I might suggest using the minor league stadium to represent the old Exhibition Stadium....I know it's gone now but I miss it (I went to a lot of Jay's games there as a kid).

For the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) I used a couple of Lincoln Centres, The Major League Stadium (even though old Exhibition Stadium doesn't exist anymore), a convention centre for the new RICOH coliseum, and the Brandenburg Gate for the Princess Gates (looks quite similar).

 

I'm going to do some more work on the region today.

I like it so far! I see that you're just as me when it's about railways... No normal rail-way crossings in the city-centre, only tunnels and overpasses. That's good! I only think you need to get rid of the polluting industries near the water-side... Just for the fact the game turns the blue water into a thick black liquid...

I especially like the par three off Spadina.  I always thought that was a weird place to put it - but I like that you included it.

This is a very impressive city. I love this "skydome" you speak of. However, Toronto is not the center of the universe. New York is the center of the universe. But besides that, great job!

I think , that Toronto is not the Center of the universe. Man, do you have any ideas how big the universe is? Toronto or any other city, even our planet is a millionth compared to the rest.

Good job! It's coming along great. It almost seems to be as if I'm living vicariously through you, seeing as how I haven't started working on my "Toronto" region yet!

 

May I make a suggestion as to one way of recreating realistic suburbs- if you just zone, you'll never get exactly the wealth or look that you want. However, I made some RCI ploppable lots that come in blocks (eg 6x3) that randomly plop middle class houses. I also did some for rowhouses and some shops (which I think look great for suburban Bloor street). If you want to check them out, their, here: RCI ploppables.

Yikes!!!   There is way too much pollution there.  I saw some dirty industry almost right next to a Bell Towers.  I think you need to go on a major tree planting campagne or something.  Other than the pollution, its a nice looking city.

Well, the expansion of the universe (and 4 dimensional space)dictates that any point you choose is the centre!





Anyway, I don't know if this map includes east Scarborough (my neck of the woods). If so, I'll be interested in seeing how you do the Metropolitan Toronto Zoo and the Rouge River valley (the largest urban nature reserve in the world).

Very good work on Toronto. I've been trying to recreate Toronto one way or another, but never the patience. Its nice to see Toronto on the map, finally!

Thank god for the CN Tower landmark. You wouldn't want to have the Eiffel Tower in Toronto. And finally the elevated highways are put into good use! Well the country club that you have, will have to come down soon, because that driving range will probably be destroyed as CityPlace moves west of Spadina.

Its too bad that the map doesn't extend past Etobicoke creek. I live in Mississauga, so it would have been nice to see my home in the game. Perhaps put myself in the game, so I can see what kind of virtual job I'll have, what virtual home I'll live in, and what virtual car I'll drive.
