When you're zoning, you can get zones that are either one, two, or even three squares wide. Is there any way to control this?

Welcome To Simtropolis

You can control it based on the zone size you add,but there is a limit to the size

of lot you will get.

Let me put it another way. Say I zone a 3X6 commercial section. I could get 6 3x1 lots or 3 3X2 lots or 2 3x3 lots. Is there anyway I can control which one I get? This sometimes becomes an issue when laying out transport networks. Especially when you are using roadtop pieces.

Or, you can hold the Control button while zoning, which prevents the zone from being broken into pieces while zoning. That way, you zone the exact size you want.

@ freebot...the rtmt shouldn't be a problem in commercial or industrial sectors...people can still get on and off on those lots...just like puzzle pieces...but in residential is where you have to be careful...if it's just commercial that you're worried about, you shouldn't be...

Of course I'm using RTMT in residential districts. Your traffic tends to go residential <-> commericial/industrial, after all.

In any case, the CTRL trick is pretty handy. I'm not sure if I need to be careful to limit myself to zone sizes for buildings that actually exist. If my zone is too large, will it get broken up or will it not develop at all?

you can get away with a 5x4 in low density residential (although i don't recommend it) and you can get away with a 5x5 or 6x6 if you've downloaded any large custom buildings...

No. That trick will only work to control the depth of the lot, not the width. Buildings will still break-up the width however they want to.
