Hey, I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader....

I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled....

and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada,

although I'm certain they're really really nice.

I have a Prime Minister, not a president.

I speak English and French, not American.

And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a boot'.

I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack.

I believe in peace keeping, not policing,

diversity, not assimilation,

and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal.

A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch,

and it is pronounced 'zed' not 'zee', 'zed' !!!!

Canada is the second largest landmass!

The first nation of hockey!

and the best part of North America

My name is Joe!!

And I am Canadian!!!

I don't class myself as a chav although I do live in Didcot (which is to chavs as a light is to a moth), but I am one of the more sociable one sin Didcot. Yes, I like to have a laugh with my mates. Yes, I drink sometimes. But I know that I don't intimidate people and make them feel threatened/ vulnerable. A couple of weeks ago an 11 year old child was being beaten outside our Co-Op by a group of 17/ 18 year olds. A man came to his rescue and as a result ended up being made deaf in both ears. Things like that make me sick and who suffers? The rest of us teenagers who are doing nothing wrong, and get moved on from the park and the shops for simply being the wrong age at the wrong time. Pah.

Yeah... I hate stereotypes.

I'm kinda big for my age (10th grade) so people just assume I'm some kind of hooligan. I've never smoked, drank alcohol, and I don't even use swearwords... Except "damn" or "pissed"... but I save those for when my Simcity disc doesn't work 3.gif

Maybe it's because I'm the type of person who can laugh at oneself easily, but I sometimes find stereotypes rather amusing, especially when used in a satirical nature.  Of course sometimes they can be offensive, but for the most part (if you have a good sense of humor) they can make a better day.  Or maybe it's because I'm the type of guy whose stereotypes don't seem that bad.

But the reasone teenagers create this view upon them is because it's the bad that sticks out.  Why does news seem better when it's about war, crime, and pain?  Same reasoning here.  The bad ones set the stereotype.  The main reason that the hoolagans are what they are is becuase they are idle.  If one has nothing to do (and with the common adolecent reasoning, "I'm invincible," which sometimes I'm a victim of too) interesting things begin to occur... some of which are a bit dangerous.  Get these people occupied with something other than gangs and drugs and other things that hoolagans do and your problem is solved.  Give them organized sports and the problem is solved.  I've seen this in youngsters:  They are very noise and troublemakers when they don't have anything to occupy themselves with... I occupy them with a game and they calm down.  It's inhuman to be albe to sit and do nothing... the human mind must be occupied with something, be it sleep, drugs, or good work... occupation must be present.

Yeah, listen to Ivan (autoVino)! He knows what he's talking about!

But seriously, teens do have some shortcomings that simply can't be denied. There is a shortage of experience which causes poor decision-making and unfortunately also prevents teens from being able to read people's faces and situations clearly. Earlier in this thread someone commented about a study wherein teens gave opinions about their problems with adults (the biggest complaint being hypocrisy). There have been other, much more famous studies wherein teens and adults are shown pictures of different faces and asked what emotion they are seeing. Adults consistently read the faces better and more accurately than teens.

Now does this mean that all teens are bad and should be treated like dirt? No, because not all teens are bad, and some actually do avoid mistakes (those are few and far between, like Great People in Civ3). So, you're not all yobs and troublemakers, but you'll probably just have to learn to put up with it till you're older and more experienced2.gif.

I am going to hunt that teacher down and tell her that is not true.

On a more according to the topic note, I got thrown out of starbucks yesterday because I was in there with about 10 friends (17 years old). This is despite the fact that we were just ordering some Caramel Frappacinos (so good...). I had paid and was waiting for mine when they kicked us out for no reason, I refused to leave until I got my drink though. Seems like around here you need to be a Jerk to work at Starbucks....

And another note, was recently traveling with a friend and his mother, who couldn't accept the fact that I knew my way around Atlanta and LG airports while she was getting lost...damn stereotypes....

Hypocrasy in all it's glory has never been been so blatant.

I am not one of "the bad teens" i don't drink, i don't smoke and I've never tried to cause any trouble. The first time I used the F-word was in grade 8, but yes I understand where you're coming from. I've never been stereotyped (mainly because I'm a shut-in) but I know it happens. The high school downtown decided to boycot the mall a few blocks away because the security there was overbearing and telling them to hurry up and leave, so the students just said, fine, we'll leave, but let's just see how it affects the food court here if we don't come back. The security just assumed that every teenager was there to make trouble, not to have a pleasant lunch. even in my own school i've seen those gangstas and preps, and let me tell you i know a place where the can put all that crappy bling, I have nothing against Black culture, but it's just not cool when there are only four black people in your whole school (not to mention the fact that all four are girls) and you're sitting in the middle of suburbia.

What I find is that it's little more than a false identity, most of these kids have never held a gun, they have never been part of a gang, nor have they ever lived on the street, they wear clothes that real gangsters could never afford, all because they saw it in some *****ty Cent video. I'm not a hypocrite (I recognize my hypocrasy and accept it as part of my complex inner workings), I'm proving a point, and that point is, it's better to be yourself than part of some fad cause in a few years some of these kids will look back ( just like adults who wore Bell Bottoms as teens) and say What was I thinking. and they will be made fun of. of course some people never change and will always be sheep lost in a herd

Maybe its just me, but I've never really thought about this much...

Live and let live...

Let bygones be bygones

etc...

I don't care if people follow fads, I don't care if people don't follow fads. I certainly fall into both categories. Yes I own an iPod and I like it. No I don't keep up with the latest fashion trends... Nowadays people are assuming that following fads and "being yourself" are mutually exclusive and they are not. I CHOOSE to follow a fad or I CHOOSE not to. Thats being myself, even if I look like a sheep. I wonder why people assume that following a fad is like you are some how not fulfilling your aspirations and are not yourself. Fads are fads because people like them, when people like things, they follow them.

In terms of "the unfairness" of life, maybe 10 years ago I may have agreed with the ST choir here proclaiming that I am treated unfairly. But at 21, I COMPLETELY see why adults label youth as they do, because youth tend to quite frankly be obnoxious and inconsiderate. There are of course exceptions. But I can't help but feel like I need a cane and say "get out of here you young whipper snappers." I find highschoolers rather repulsive and I always wondered if I was the same because if I was, I'm glad that I'm not that way. As much as you would like to think that your brief journey of less than two decades has somehow given you enough to become wise and intelligent, think again. I know full well that I'm not as wise as I could be, not as intelligent as I can be, and probably not as mature as I want to be. Teenagers more often than not think that are super capable and they aren't. For some reason they forsake the previous generations wisdom and experience for "undeniable logic and idealism" of their own.

Again... not every teenager is like this, but dang, I can't say that I wouldn't be surprised that if I ACTUALLY knew some of you, I might only reaffirm what I believe. Life sucks, be glad you have whatever freedom you do. Walk on, if you're truly mature, you'll except that you are not as mature as you can be. You will work on your shortcomings and not blame society. And most importantly, try not to keep telling yourself your the exception, that can easily just be denial.

Edit: let me clarify myself... I find groups to teenagers in public to be "obnoxious and inconsiderate". I have no problem conversing with teens one on one.

Depends what you mean by stereotypical. There's a stereotype going around on this thread of what teenagers are, but the fact that you are a teenager means you fit into some kind of group or another.

There aren't necessarilty sterotypes, but just groups, different kinds of people. Of course there is uniqueness in all of us, but honestly there's always some kind of social grouping, it's very clearn in high school -- no denying that.

I'm not a stereotype, well I don't think I am, I'm the funny person, in the class, I'll cut it short, the class clown. I am starting to dress more like someone who likes guns and nascar/cars I guess I'm leaning republican/southern lol. But really I can't stand the ghetto kids in my area, I want to hit them with a bat, they all go saying the N word and stuff like candy being given out on halloween! I'm definitely unique though theres probably a couple other kids like me, its not popular how I have my personality though.

Oftentimes I can be going somewhere that I'm not familiar with and be able to find it easily without directions just knowing the address- by virtue of the fact that I look at maps a lot and have a very visually oriented memory- and may know where Example Street is even if I've never been there.

Now, granted, I do consult maps specifically to plan things out. I'm a fan of Google Maps (MapQuest sucks). Still, I don't type in start and end points and have it generate directions. In fact, when we're going somewhere and my mom does that and hands them to me (since I'm "navigateing"), I yell at her for giving me directions and am liable to go the whole trip without consulting them one bit and get us there just fine. I don't like the computer giving me directions. The computer doesn't have a brain and can't think. I much prefer to simply study the map and pick out a route myself. But again, I'm abnormally proficient at doing that. Most people would be much more comfortable simply being given specific directions and dread having to have to figure it out themselves. Me, I can't stand that aspect of being given a fish when I'm perfectly capable of fishing. I'm much more confident with something I figured out myself than something I was simply told.

Now, as a fellow bull-headed coot,  I tell my wife that I get lost on purpose so that I can know where I am going later on. 19.gif  It's just incredible enough for her to believe.  9.gifquote>

You know, it's interesting. I never get "lost" in the truest of senses. I've more than once had to say "We're not lost. I know exactly where we are. I just don't know where exactly we have to get to!" And even then, I'm good at sorta sniffing things out on instinct. Me, I look upon asking for directions as a last resort. I don't want to ask for directions somewhere without at least trying to find it myself.

There are those of us who don't care where milk comes from so long as we can go to the store and buy a carton of it. I am not one of those people. I want to know how it works and be able to do it. The answer doesn't satisfy me. I want to know how it was arrived at. That is, after all, what separates the nerds from the average Joes. 5.gif

Well school just isn't your thing, don't blame you there, I'm pretty much like that too. Until you actually find your source of motivation( future vision of y our life) or you know what you really want to do in life then you start becoming more motivated.

It's not really a stereotype most teenagers are like that. It's just the ones that completely disregard their futures and simply want to just have fun and not work hard.

I'm very glad you don't hit anybody with a bat.  That was quite a racist confession you made.   There are many people who fit how you described yourself (i.e. class clown, likes cars & NASCAR, republican/southern) who have no opinions either way about so-called "ghetto kids" and get along with everyone quite fine.

It doesn't really seem all that racist to me. After all, he was saying that he can't stand them because of the colorful language they use, not because of their race. I presume a white, Asian, Hispanic, etc. kid who acts the same way would also be annoying, while a black kid who acts differently would not. Am I right?

Actually the phrase "ghetto kid" is a pretty derogatory phrase regardless of which ethnic or racial group it was meant to characterize. Saying that one wants to hit others with a bat b/c of racial/ethnic differences is pretty hateful too.
