Vista and Crashing

OK! I am starting to get annoyed very quickly. I have searched and not ben able to find anything on this problem yet.

I am playing SC4 just fine, the next second, it just crashes.

I just moved to Vista from XP Home.

I have a great system.

I have not donwloaded anything else for the game since I moved over to the new computer. but the game just crashes for no reason. I am not understanding this. I had a crappy system before with only 1G of ram and the same game and it ran just fine with no problems. can anyone help me out here?

It does that to me too. But it happens alot less with vista now than it did with XP(it crashed all the time for no reason),  the only way i lessened the problem was saving ALOT. but yes, that does get very annoying

it never did this when i had xp... im not sure what effect vista is having on the game.... but this is weird

Same thing for me.  My desktop has xp and it runs fine.  My laptop has more memory, a better processor, and a better video card but it constantly crashes.  I've made sure my game is up to date and even run it off a external hard drive now but it still crashes.  I don't know what else to do and hope somebody here will know.

I have Vista, but I kept my XP Home computer to play Simcity 4 on, since I knew from prior experience that Simcity 4 crashes when I play it on Vista as well. My advice is, Vista sucks, XP rules, keep playing Simcity 4 on XP. Sorry if this advice aint what you expected...

That doesn't happen to me. I have Vista Home Premium, and I've played for hours multiple times. Not once has it crashed for an unidentifiable reason (when it does crash, it's usually a plugin that's doing it, and I can prevent repeats). I'd have to think it's not Vista that's causing your game to crash

...at least, it's not the sole culprit.

 Note to everyone, Window Vista is NOT compatibe with Simcity 4 . Window XP is okay, at least no random game crashes.

its anoying... to the point that within a few minuts of runing it crashs.......... even with set afinaty and priority...

I use Vista 64bit and had to set the graphics rendering to software mode. While using software mode I only get a crash to desktop every once in a while. Since I have quad core processor and 4GB of memory I do not notice much difference in the graphics. The only time I turn on hardware rendering is when I take pictures as the colors are a bit more vivid. My graphics card is an Nvidia 8800GTS with 640MB memory. It might be that some newer video cards could cause this problem. I have also read in these forums that people with monitors that have a different resolution then the standard game resolutions have crash problems. When they manually change the resolution it seems to help. I have also observed that the majority of crashes I get are due to zooming in and out and scrolling to fast. Also I have learned to use as many keyboard shortcuts especially when saving rather then using my mouse which has helped a lot. Using these techniques and also saving frequently has solved my crash to desktop problem for the most part.

it shoudlnt be like this though. maxis should fix this. they have essentially left sc4 in the dust..... and it has been like this way beore ssc came out too..... its almost like they just dont care...

Hi, try running disk clean-up and defragmentor and see if you can free up more space used for running you game! This could help.

I run SimCity 4 on a Vista 64bit system with NO crashs, it run better then on my old XP system

I've actually noticed a significant drop in CTD with Windows Vista, although this is likely to be the fact that I got Vista with a new system, and thus have more memory, etc. As previously mentioned, newer graphics cards may be less and less compatible...so even hardware UPGRADES may cause problems. Not necessarily the OS's fault..if it was, I wouldn't be playing. When I got my new system, I just put the CD's in, and I was playing within 20 minutes and have not had 1 problem.

On my Vista it does the same thing just it does it in 5 seconds after playing. Please answer on the Crashes Way to Much problem.

Does this to me. I just have a 3 minute timer to stop me losing too much progress. I would love it if anyone could tell us a solution. I have tried reducing the Color Depth, putitng it on my other (smaller) monitor, Software and Hardware rendering, but nothing seems to make much difference.

Please can someone tell us how to fix this annoying problem!!

My Vista problem is worse. After seeing the intro graphic, either the disk is not recognized and everything freezes or I get a BSD. I have tried the various fixes recommended by EA (compatability, run as admin, and hot fixes), but have had no luck. I was able to get the program to run before installing the version 1.1.638.0 patch, but there were numerous graphics issues, e.g. no roads appeared. Any thoughts on this? I have the latest drivers and have updated everything.

I tried to contact technical assistance through EA's website, but the app wasn't working (go figure). I got an internal server error message. I've read numerous reports of people who are able to play the game under Vista, but I have had no luck. I've not found many accounts of a problem as bad as what I am having.

Same problems here. I got my system last week and it seems like it's crashing to desktop more and more often. In my main region the smaller cities seem to run ok, but in my main city I can't play for more than 20 seconds today before it crashes again. Just crashes to desktop without a message or anything.

Its not vista causing your problems.
