Actually, Duke Nukem 3D was released in January of 1996 and the full "Atomic Edition" was released in December of the same year. Nothing new. That's not what this thread is about. This thread is about this:

If all those calendars in the game are to be believed, then Duke Nukem 3D takes place in December of 2007... or in other words, this month. Beware, the aliens are coming!2.gif

That looks like '3007' to me

'Duke Nukem Forever' is pretty aptly named though... considering its been in development for 10 freaking years 18.gif

Well, yeah, I remember that calendar, lol! 10.gif

I played this game long ago and loved it. Lot of fun in the "Lunar Apocalypse" episode, still the best space levels IMO. Duke Nukem 3D was the last "simulated 3D" FPS game before Quake started the new 3D era.

However, while "waiting" for Duke Nukem Forever I went some months ago in the 3DRealms website and I found Duke Nukem 3D High Resolution. It turns monsters and sprites in real 3D, if you want to take a look... http://hrp.duke4.net/ 2.gif

Come get some!

^^^and in that high resolution mod the calendar quite clearly says "Decmeber 2007". It's fanmade, though, so it's not infallible. The burning fuses on a TV screen (a reference to Mission: Impossible) were accidentally rendered as comets. There's some other fun to be had in it, too. All the blank blue screens now display blue screens of death. The shotgun ammo clearly says "Remington" on it (it sorta looked like that before). What was previously pixels representing fine print on the Federal Loan and Trust sign now reads "The federal loan and trust is committed to making America Rich. One large company at a time. We stand for the people of big business looking to make the little guy poor. We offer a high standard in debt collection and promise to only break legs in extreme circumstances such as 2 day late payment of funds. With over 100 years of experience you can be safe in the knowledge that we will get our cash back in one form or another. And we fully sympathize with the debt ridden scum who use our service and promise that we will treat them with at least the same level of contempt as we hold for pigeons." The high res menus at Duke Burger are worth a good chuckle, too.5.gif

...the downside is that with all this high res stuff running what's still basically the original game engine, levels take a while to load.

Yeah, that's Duke Nukem for ya. The whole running gag is that the vast majority of all the humans depicted in the game are women, and all the women are scantly clad. It's a game targeted at guys after all.21.gif Also note that that's one of the less risqué depictions of women in the game.

Another note: that calendar in the High Res mod has a screenshot from DOA Extreme Beach Volleyball as the picture on top.

...even in Land of the Babes, where the women are depicted in stronger roles and actually do something besides stand there and be eye candy, they still follow the same format. None of them are modestly dressed, they all refer to themselves as "babes" (this even becomes funny at some points), and all, of course, are absolutely smitten with Duke. Because he's just that manly.5.gifTime to Kill takes the prize for the silliest depiction, though. Talking to the "babes" is done with the action button (X) which is also used to push buttons, pull crates, and fire. And when you go to talk to one of them, the same exact animation used for Duke pushing a button is used, which translates to him reaching out and touching them you know where, basically. It's Duke's way of saying "hi", I guess.34.gif Though the idea of pushing women like they were buttons is also pretty funny. Especially since they're all repetitive response NPCs, so it might as well be that.21.gif

These games aren't meant to be taken seriously. It's supposed to be satirical. Humor through hyperbole. Take the stereotypes and exaggerate them to ridiculous levels.

...you can understand why the feminists and the church groups hate them, though.31.gif

Actually, it was normal toilets, too, not just urinals. And it would be worth 10 points of health. Though once you did it, you'd have to wait a while before being able to do it again- either after entering a new level or having a significant amount of time go by (not sue of the exact figure, but it's over 10 minutes). Duke would lower his gun, you'd hear a trickle sound, and Duke would say "Ahh... much better!" with a flush. After that it would just flush. I remember vividly my dad laughing hysterically the first time he saw that.5.gif

Though, you could also kick/shoot the toilets to break them and drink from the resulting water spout to gain back health 1 point at a time, unlimited at a rate of about 1 per second. Fire hydrants and water fountains were good for this, too.

Future games worked differently with this- you could only use each toilet once, but you could use as many there were in a row without waiting.

Duke Nukem has been the source of a lot of great quotes. Unfortunately, the best one is circumstantial and you wouldn't truly appreciate it even if I explained it to you, you need to be playing the game, and you need to hear it, not read it. The game in question is Manhattan Project. The level is Deviant Drilling-Part 3. You'll know what I'm talking about when you hear it.2.gif
