Freeze then crashing when mouse is still

I'm running SC4 Deluxe with all the patches, my Pc specs are Pentium 4 3.40Ghz CPU ,1 GB of RAM, Nvidia GeForce 6600 and I run XP SP2. I think that's it, I've probably forgotten some details.

When I leave the mouse stationery for a short period time, a minute, the computer freezes and then crashes, I can delay the crash by keeping the mouse moveing, but eventually it crashes, I started to notice this with SC4, but then when playing a small racing game it also started to freeze the computer and now I have SCS, which I haven't played beecause I can't get far enough through all the menus without the computer freezing and crashing. how ever when I'm not on games it's fine and there are no crashes. It's really annoying because my PC isn't the fastest at starting up.
Help would be much apprieciated

Your specs seem good but then I ain't a computer nerd.

Now some will disagree with me but if your running Vista well that might cause your problem. When we bought this computer it came with Vista and ever since it has been a headache.2.gif

Fellas, he says he is running XP.

Your problem is not the game.  It is something in your operating system or your mouse.

If you have enabled power saving options, you might review them.

I agree this could be a screen saver trying to get in, also.

Make sure all your device and MOBO drivers are up to date, especially the mouse driver.  If you have a manufacturers mouse (e.g. Logitech) load those drivers rather than the default ones.

Please read the post before you reply, this is not about Vista.

Warrior:  Are you running SC4 in window mode, if not then the screen saver won't activate.

Since it is happening with other games, I think it is a problem with the  Windows installation.  It may have been caused by a system crash at some time that corrupted system files.

I am not running any games in windowed mode, and my mouse is a Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000, if that makes any difference.

MOBO = mother board.  All the devices on your motherboard, including your CPU have a driver loaded in the HAL (Hardware Access Layer).  You should check to see if any of them have been updated.  You can find out what devices you have from either the System Information tool or, better, from the hardware applet in the control panel.

Vista issues are pretty much a thing of the past now provided you have all signed drivers.
