New BAT project

Looking through the Simtropolis Exchange, I noticed a lack of UK style council houses. I'm considering producing some, which will possibly be used as part of an upcoming city journal I might start.

I live in Bracknell, which in itself is a horrid town, but has the advantage of having quite an impressive variety of council houses, being a new town. I'm intending to model a variety of council houses based upon those found here. Initially, i'll only be concentrating on R$ houses.

Producing small scale models will allow me to familiarise myself with gmax, and I intend on producing more advanced models at a later date, including schools, and a large medical centre (which I previously mentioned the possibility of creating, but won't be starting it for a while yet).

The plan is to release several different models, on a few different lots, all as one package.

I plan to update frequently with progress.

Im sure we could use these. Just remember some things to consider before attempting a BAT project.

    1. Make sure nothing is being reproduced. (Im sure nothings not in this case anyway)

    2. Post here or in a thread where it already exists on updates and questions you might have on the project or other things concerning the project.

    3. Adequit BAT's are nice, and I recommend they are inspected and thoroughly tested for bugs and errors, as well as texture problems and model problems.(Dont upload a BAT that will look horrible in the game)

    4. Have fun and good luck!

The houses themselves will be very similar to those found in my town (based on real buildings), but all the work will be mine.

I'll update the progress of this project using this thread. I'm doing the first houses tonight.

I'll not be uploading anything until i'm 110% happy with the results. For example, there seems to be a lighting glitch in the BAT - I can't seem to get external lighting to work correctly.

I like to think i'm ok. I've only just started really, but seemed to have picked up the software well. I want to finish a couple of the models before uploading, but might have something available tonight...

I am hoping for some criticism though - as i'm sure they could be improved.

I've updated my signature to show my progress with this project. Once the first run of several models are completed, i'll upload images of them. I'm surprised how many models and variants there are actually...

Thanks i'll have to check that out. Was easier to put the BAT models in game actually. I seem to have an error with night lighting though, so whilst night lights are enabled in the models, they won't show in game.

The left model is Ullswater, the right is called Waverley. Criticism welcomed...

EDIT: Apologies about size and quality - this is the first time i've done this...

These are just the raw models...

Yeah, had a few issues with getting an image upload. Think i've figured it out though.

I agree the textures on the models in game look a little bright.

Thank you very much! Theres quite a few models i'm working on, so there will be quite a few more buildings to come hopefully.

I think theres still a few things to iron out, but i'm quite pleased with the results so far.

Well you should be very proud these are very good for your first project. They remind me somehow of going to Birmingham by train..not sure why..I dunno perhaps they resemble some council homes that the train runs by.

When you release them just be sure to release them in both Medium and High Density..because I want these to grow in groups apart from gascookers' terraces...you know...to creat that council estate FEEL 2.gif

Yeah, Bracknell is full of these types of houses, though there are quite a number of different designs, so theres a fair bit of variety. The first phase of the project will be concentrating on 70's council houses, so they will all be from that era.

The second phase will be 60's council houses, predominantly from the north of the town.

I'm not sure about the release particulars yet - will need quite some advice when I get to that stage, i'll be concentrating on getting the models made first. I am thinking of making both growable and ploppable versions though, so that one has more control over their growth. I'm also unsure whether to release them individually or as a set...

Cheers for that. yeah, i've downloaded it, but will need to have a bit of a play about with it to familarise myself. What I really want to do is put several of the renders (from gmax) onto one page. Plus, whilst i've got night lighting enabled in the models themselves, I can't get these to show in game. They do, however show on the rendered elevations of the models.
