Is this it? Why is this fun?

Longtime simcity player, back to the 90's and Sim City original on Nintendo. And I can't see what is fun about this game. I've played through the tutorial and onward for about 2 hours and I'm left feeling like I'm missing the GAME. Surely this isn't it! Is it?

From what I have witnessed today I get the feeling that with the development of this game they headed into a direction that was thought up by the marketing guys, went into the tunnel and never got out again to see what's buzzing on top, that was until they had it finished and it was too late to turn back. I am certainly not impressed and hope they will (in my eyes) see their mistake and get working on a REAL Sim City that is worth the name. Not a Sims-like clone kid game, as that is what it feels like for me. It feels limited and gives you the feeling of a Sim Town kind of game.

I will give it another swing though, but the initial feeling is unfortunately not good.

It's not fun. The focus of the game is not on building a city, but instead on balancing ambiguous numbers that don't make any sense. It's really not a city builder at all, it makes no sense.

They said previous simcity games were too complicated, and that they would simplify that. Instead they have made a game so detached from what it is supposed to be about that you have no idea why anything does anything. So basically it is more complicated.

Exactly. This game is all about balancing numbers and plopping buildings left and right. I knew this game was going to be bad but so far it has gone below me already low expectations. Thank you EA for ruining such a renowned and prestigious franchise that was Sim City.

its not supposed to be fun, its supposed to make them $50 a pop. hoping every SC fan takes the bait on another sc based game. I have a feeling SC is actually dead within EA. I cant hold out any longer, ill be done when SC4 is.

>> well as some of us know, sims 3 is due out 2009. maybe after that simsocieties, where you plop the sims ::imagines a poorly sewn doll:: and you get to add clothes or items around the floor to change the mood of the doll. Masterpeice!!

Well I'm still playing SC4 so I can be satisfied for now. I do agree with you though, SC is most likely dead. EA will try to focus more on The Sims after this debacle. What will EA think of next? A Sims game where you can't control the Sims but only their emotions?

One word: UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

What the heck is this madness? Has EA lost their minds??? This game shouldn't even have the title SimCity because it's deceiving. It's some other weird kids game that doesn't make a bit of sense. i feel like a NERD when I play it because of the stupid KIDDY-FEEL they put into it.

Why doesn't someone - ANYBODY - just come up with an absolute CLONE of SimCity 4 and make it 3D - That's all we really want anyway. Am I right?

To me it doesnt matter if its full 3d or looking like SC4.

I would be happy with an update game of SC4 with bending roads, not only square lots and more realistic nature/enviroment.

Theres lot of improvement to do on the SC, but instead they make a totally new game with no feel of the old SC. WHY

Even if SC4 is not in full 3d it gives the feeling of city planning and everything a city simulator should, so full 3d doesnt really car to me just as long as the feeling of playing the game is good.

I have to say, the tutorial was disappointing. It wasn't helpful other than to say, ok there are these different powers or energies and some buildings need them in order to function.

But beyond that, the tutorial was not inspiring.

Ok, moving past  the tutorial, the game has a complex interface with lots of data being thrown at you that any long-time SC fan should love. We love data! We love to see what's going on! We love to see what happens to our city when we do different things. I think TiltedMill really tried to give lots of ways to track people in the city, track their moods, their productivity, their happiness, etc.

But that takes some getting used to as these aren't the familiar ways of tracking data. The interface is different. The data itself is different. So that is a hurdle to getting into it.

But once I did, I actually found that it was a bit of fun, manipulating the energy, not only to get knew rewards, trophies, etc., to unlock new buildings, but also because it was producing effects on my Sims. I kept getting all these drunks and robbers. And I didn't want that. So I had to get the happiness up.

That is the same sort of simulation basics that have always been there in SC games. Have crime, add a police station. But now, we have different tools and different ways of tracking those things. You don't just have to add a police station. You can effect crime - the social energies - by working to change the energies themselves.

Obviously, not everyone will like this. But I think in time people will be able to make some adjustments.

I personally was shocked by how politically incorrect it was. 3.gif I mean, with the bars, the smoke shop, the religion... I have to hand it to Tilted Mill for taking the risk.

And how politically screwed up it was... Authortarian is no specific Ideaology, its a crude mix of Communism and Facism wich are direct opposites... whatever floats your boat I guess.

Pfft. EA listen to it's fans. I mean honestly, we have on this forum been saying "OMFG EA WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU! WHY ARE YOU MAKING SUCH A [long string of profanity] GAME?!!?!?!!?!? OMFG*****ZORS" (That's how all of you feel deep down inside... You know it... Even if you do disguise your flame with good grammar and proper ettiquite...)

But, I take solace in the fact that it's not Tilted Mill's fault. I mean they made games like Caesar IV, which is pretty complex. In that game you had to carefully plan out development, keep populace happy, develop transport networks, etc...

It's kind of funny though as this game has two major contradictions in it.

-EA made this game to "expand their fanbase". But, if SC4 players are recoiling at the very thought of it, what makes them think SCS players will switch to SC4, or a possible SC5?

-No diagonal roads, no need for interconnected transport, simplistic overlay values, is it just me, or does it sound like you're playing SimCity classic (no offense, but that game's OLD, so it has an advantage).

I hope someone from Tilted Mills see this thread.

From the start it was obvious no one there cared about what Sim City was about. I struggle to keep myself interested. As of now I'm trying to get all the buildings and fill a tile. Once I achive this which should be no challenge I think I'll be completely bored with this game.

Should take a total of 4 days from purchase.

I have never played a Tilted Mills game before. I never will again. They got my sales due to be a loyal fan of a great series. I and many once "loyal" fans feel let down.

This game shoudl be in the discount bin by Christmas. $9.99

I just hope someone can make a few more textures for land and or buildings. Please get modding to salvage this dissapointment.

So glad I saved my money!! In the end I think Cities Unlimited will replace SimCity as the benchmark for city-builders.

Wow, I came here expecting good reviews, yet most of you feel like I do.  I'm glad I didn't buy it, but it's trash.  It's like SimCopter, but more pointless.

I'll try Spore, but if that's anything like Societies, I'm done with the franchise.

well isn't this how all good things end. Star wars, the Matrix, pharaoh, Caesar and now SC4. a greedy corporation and a loyal fan base. too bad really. SCS is a game for children and casual gamers, nothing else
