    I just want to say Happy Halloween everyone! I know its a bit early and all but I always love making the holiday threads and having everyone say what they're doing over the holiday and what not. So go ahead, tell us if you're dressing up, if you're going anywhere special, anything!

    This year I'm going to sit out on my front porch dressed up as some sort of zombie psychopath (I don't even know, really) and scaring unsuspecting victims. And on this coming Friday there is the PumpkinFest here in Norwich, and then there's a Halloween dance 2 Fridays from now, so I'm going to be pretty busy!

Halloween, for me, as gone from a pointless holiday to run around and get free candy to eat and  go to school the next day all bonkers, to a fun reason to be with friends and kick the face off the goofy-o-meter.

I'm probably the only one here who will be doing a pagan ritual thing with my friend on Halloween, as Halloween is actually a Pagan New Year festival; Samhain. As one of my best friends is a pagan, we will be celebrating the day doing..uh...Pagany stuff.

N_O_Body: We do actually have some stone circles around here. Most of them are waymarkers for the old celtic farmers. We also have a few gravesites, marked with stones, of celtic druids.

I guess we'll be doing something with those at some point.

I'm doing nothing as usual because the joy of Halloween has basically been killed (around here anyway). I mainly don't like it because of the so-called "trick or treat" which actually means "money or hospital". So I live by this rule - don't trick or treat; we are Brits, not Americans, and we are also humans, not chavs. This only corresponds to British people as I reckon Americans have a different view on the whole thing.

And trick-or-treaters are now very, very rare around where I live. The last one I had at my door was Halloween of '99.

Wow, I had no idea there was so much anti-trick or treating sentiment outside of my country.

For what it's worth, most trick or treating here in the states is done by pre-teens and young adolescents and involves a whole lot more treat than trick.  The whole gimmick is to dress up in a costume and score lots of candy from willing participants (Usually signified by houses or apartments in a given neighborhood with halloween decorations up and lights on all over the place).  Most trick or treaters are accompanied by a responsible party and the whole thing happens in residential areas with lots of activity around so the prospects of "trickery" are pretty limited.

Tricksters are generally older teens looking for any excuse to cut lose for a night.  Generally no real harm done there.

You could argue that the idea of "begging" for candy is un-becoming or teaches irresponsible behavior.  Or that the true meaning of the holiday is lost in typical american consumerism.  Or you could lighten up a bit, heh.

The only real anti-halloween sentiment I've seen in the states is from religious zealots who fear the holidays pagan roots.  And maybe some grouching from childless adults who are too old to go to a halloween party and resent the noise of the kids in the neighborhood.

All that said, my teenagers school is letting them have friday off if their school makes it through tonight without being vandalized ().  It's being called a "Good Behavior" holiday.  I thought that was kind of interesting.

And happy Halloween to all you trick or treat haters!  Haha!
