Ok Mod Squad, now that we have RH and you have figured out how to create lots to sit on transportation networks(Street busstop). How about creating a freight yard, similar to the Large Rail station. I would think now it would be possible for you to do this.3.gif

Any bafoon could make it once Maxis releases a proper working RH Lot Editor. But for now the Mod Squad has to handle it.

I would like to see freight yards as well but until engines and rolling stock can be made as props, they would be empty.

Make the lot, and we'll make it functional 2.gif.

I'll even volunteer to write a custom path file for it, so that you can see the freight trains going all over the place on this lot.  It's impossible to create stationary trains, but the moving ones are relatively easy.

Just make the lot, and we'll make it hook up to surrounding rails.  I'm not totally sure what governs where along the border of the lot the rails must meet, but DM or teirusu probably know more about the applicable lotconfig property.

Ok here is what I have initially, this is just for size and general layout. I will be adding props later, just wanted to get comments first. It is a 6x10 lot, the same size as the Large rail station.

Oh, that's nice, I hope there is a subway yard just like in 207th street and an Elevated railyard just like Van Courtland in the Bronx.

Is there room to add an extra track on each side so that each tile is four tracks deep instead of just two? Even if for now those tracks would be vacant, I think it would make the yard more real.

I don't know what you mean by this, maybee you could include a sketch or example.

Right now we have 2 tracks per tile. He wants to have 4 tracks per tile.

Oh, I see now. Of course how I didn't get that in the first place I don't know14.gif. That would require custom textures so if anyone would make them, I'm not good at making textures15.gif, then I would be glad to include them. Also, that would make it look much more realistic.10.gif

The only problem with having four tracks per tile is that it would look funny when you lay actual tracks (network pieces) up to the lot.  You would have two tracks per tile leading up to the lot, and then it would suddenly jump to four.  Although, if someone could figure out how to do it, it might not look as bad if only the dead-end tracks were doubled up.  Just a thought.

Actually, with custom textures we could do something like the following sketch:
    /idealbb/files/Tracks1.jpg
With the red tracks being the original and the black tracks being added.

Would anyone be able to make custom textures for this? It would involve several switches and expansions on the current tracks to place then 4 wide on a tile.

I can give it a try. I'm not sure how successful I'll be though.

If I may make a comment here ...

This Yard will typically be used in an Industrial Area / City .... the default ZONE Blocks for Industry is 8x8 ... I suggest that this RAIL YARD be of the Dimension 6x16 ... That will fill 2 Industrial Zone blocks and leave some space for trees or lots on the edge ... it will also allow some room to start merging incoming and outgoing rail tracks and roads. I typically see that the whole complex around such a station would cover around 12x24 tiles.

    Just a thought.

Since I really don't know much at all about the lot editor, and even less about the reader, I will only make suggestions. Perhaps you need some more props, like building and maybe some cranes and trucks in the yard as well. Also, perhaps longer and some more track. Real rail yards are massive and stretch for miles in some cases. I am very interested in this lot. ( i was under the assumption that it was supposed to be included in RH, but I think I mistook it for the Grand Rail Station, which is also very nice. I look forward to a finished product here, and if I can be of any assistance at all, let me know.

I've been hoping some one that has already found all the texture files could get them to me.

If someone could please post the textures that would greatly help. I have no idea where to look for them.23.gif

I initially made this freight rail station 3x8 when the lot editor first came out. I just added some newer rail textures and made it 6x8. Feel free to use anypart of this file to help make a working rail yard.

Does anyone have the texture files for the train tracks, that would be a big help; I have no idea where to look for them.

Ok never mind, thanks to the Reader I was able to find them very easily. I packaged them here so if anyone would like to try making some new textures with added rails on each side that would be great. I will try but I don't know how succesful I will be. I don't need textures for all of the included files, just the straight ones. With new textures and Train Car props this should come out looking very nice.10.gif

Ok here is a preview of what 4 tracks should look like together:

Edit: That was the easy one, now for the others.15.gif

Sorry it took so long on getting back to this. I hope this is good enough to get started.
The FSHs are in the ZIP file. The first one has an alpha channel as well.

While posting this I just realized you had posted the same thing.
Let me know if you rather make the make the tiles or have me complete the set.

    /idealbb/files/a9.jpg /idealbb/files/b4.jpg
All five zoom levels for each tile is in the ZIP file.

I was thinking it would be nice to make sections instead of one large yard so there's fexability.
    /idealbb/files/ab.jpg /idealbb/files/bb.jpg
The yard can be as long as the person wants.
    /idealbb/files/abbbba.jpg
I noticed the center tracks don't match up right. I can fix it if you feel it's too noticable.

I think I will try to make the textures myself, after looking at them I don't think it will be too hard. Thank you for doing those though.

How do you add an alpha channel to an fsh file, I couldn't figure that out. I am also having problems getting the textures into the lot editor. I made a .dot file but I can't see the textures in the editor. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.

    -Thanks
