Monorails should be used to carry high-speed intercity traffic with few stops, rather than lower speed intracity commuters. They are not designed to be a substitute for the subway or el, though in certain situations you can use them that way. I like to use them in conjunction with parking garages and bus stops, to give sims an efficient way to get the stations. I've also used them with ferry and subway stops. They're tricky to place correctly to get sims to ride them, but you can get substantial ridership with careful placement/planning.

The way you should set them up is to put some of the Monorail stops in/near your residential area, and connect them to stops in different cities or in your own.

there all i use, there sooo efficiant, it has saved a city from going under twice for me, i suggest using them heavily,

to set them up just lay the rail and place stations on the rail directly, no parking garages needed, athough they could be necessary if minimum stations are placed.

Place them from your residential, deep within...and drag over to wherever the jobs are at industry, or commercial, or mabye a school or firestation, just make sure they can get to there jobs with the monerail, or they wont use it, and it will just be a waste of money, hope this helps, have fun creating a megalopolis!!

I use monorails between communities, whether they are on the same large tile or on separate tiles.  I quite often use a transfer depot of some sort, usually a pedestrian mall rather than a multiple BAT station to get people to switch from local MT to monorail for the long haul.   Usually works very well.

The main trick here is to avoid local road connections to places the monorail goes.  Keep your population in pods, and you won't have any problem getting usage.
