I have not had a computer for a while because of very young children but rather like Rip Van Winkle I have returned to Sim City. Hi folks

The last version I played for sure was Sim City 2000 so I am rusty and a bit confused by all the options

it took me ages to find the Deluxe version ( I got a version of Sim City 4 without rush hour a while back but it is now in the shops)

difficulties - need help

- does this version have an altitude indicator - or some other way of levelling slopes - theres lots of rolling land in this version

- having trouble placing seaports. cant get them to go blue - despite lowering the beach to just above sea level and levelling the area

- can we swap cities in Sim 4

- can't save different versions of the same city - don't have a  "save as" function ?

- powerstations - used to have time left -  how do you know when to replace them

any help - grateful

If the city has been incorporated, you can use the god mode cheat to get the god mode terraforming tools.  Press shift ctrl Alt keys, then click on the god icon on the left.

Seaports need the terrain to be straight, and wide enough, elevation is not that critical.  They won't plop on a diagonal beach.

You could swap cities with someone if you could find a way to exchange the files.

You can copy the city file to the my documents Simcity 4\regions\downloads folder, then you can import it to a city of the same size.

Power stations lose efficiency as they age, I usually replace them when they get below 90%.  But you could go longer if you are strapped for funds.

Hello, and welcome to ST!  I'll see how well I can answer your questions...

1.)Sorry, no altidude indicator.  You'll have to see how well you can guesstimate.

2.)Use PEG's Leveler on the STEX to do this.

3.)Swapping cities is a bad idea.  The file sizes are insane, and the dependeny lists would be too.  But if you really wanted to...

4.)There's no real "save-as" function.  Entering the city name upon establishment and saving it afterwards is your "save-as".

5.)Other than a pop-up saying so-and-so power plant is no spring chicken, I would suggest following the link to the aging power plant and query it to see how well it's doing in terms of percent effeciency.

Hope this helps, and enjoy your stay!  You will absolutely love it here!

Welcome.  These are all good answers.  Here are a few helpful tips:

  1. Browse the Omnibus.  It is the best SC4 manual in existence.
  2. When you are ready, get the NAM.  Read its requirements very carefully.  This adds a lot of stuff to the network part of the game, including do-it-yourself transit structures.
  3. Read the stickies, here and in Bugs and Technical Issues.  These are here as labor saving devices for us poor, beleaguered mods.
  4. Run in Rhino mode most of the time.  You need time for the Simulator to catch up, and the animation (eye-candy) can be pretty interesting.
  5. Stay in the black as much as possible.  You can't win this game, but you can lose it by going broke.
Have fun.
