downloadable cities

i think we should have a page where people can upload and download user made cities.

There isn't a page here which allows cities to be uploaded for a couple of reasons:

1) Downloaders of the city would have to have all the same plugins as the uploader of the city or it won't work properly.

2) Cities are large files and would take up quite a lot of space on the site server.

They're the two main reasons.

i think thatd be cool. you could just upload a city that you used no plugins for, right? and if the space is an issue maybe there could be a different website or something

First off redhead55, could you delete one of your posts? pop9694,it might acutally be possible to do this, I really couldn't say for sure either way, but sim1234 is right about the main reasons this can't be done. And if no plugins were used, you would have to delete or move all of your plugins out of the game, it would be a little plain.

The main reason it would be prohibitive is the size of the city files, even a small city can easily be over a MB, and a fully developed large city can be 60MB or more.

Size, size, size...yes, most cities would easily topple the 10MB limit yes you'd have to have every plugin the uploader has, including personal work they never realesed. Imagine a plugins list of about 200+...doesn't sound like much fun spending a day downloading and installing does it?

First off, I beat him to it.

Citys are out.  The server space would kill us.  You would also have to guarantee parity of plug ins.

And, with some things changing and being updated, an update service would be necessary.

N_O Body- Well I got two of them:

Actually I dont remember the other one. The other one had a region called "Maxisland" and it actually had about 1.5 million people in it already. If you want a screenshot of the region, I'll post it.

Well, that one is a regular 1025 x 1025 bit map.  I didn't see any config.bmp to go with it, and there is nothing in it.  You can get maps like that off the stex.  from the appearance of it, it was generated by the Landscape Generator.

Maxisland is on the Ea web site and is a demo of regional play.
