What's this plugin pack mean?

Has anyone figured this one out yet?

Hmmm!!! No one has replied to this at all, in 12 years, even though the answer is easy??? Weird. And now, 12 years later, one other person asks, which is the only reason I noticed (thread bump brought it to the top).

But the answer is simple: If you get the error "This city needs Plugin-Pack AGOW36892034 (or some such gibberish). You can still run the city without it, but some of the graphics will be incorrect", and if you load such a city, you will generally notice one or more large, ugly brown-paper packages (the size of skyscrapers) tied up with strings. Those are placeholders for missing plugins. The error message and the "packages" mean that whoever made the city used "third-party content" plugins. Such plugins are available from the "SC4Devotion" website and also from here (Simtropolis) and elsewhere. To use such plugins, just acquire them and dump them into your "Plugins" folder, typically located at "C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\My Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins".

So, to fix a "missing plugins" error, do this:

  1. Write down the number in the error message.
  2. Exit SimCity 4.
  3. Convert the number you just wrote down to hexadecimal. (You can use this site: https://www.binaryhexconverter.com/decimal-to-hex-converter )
  4. Get on the Internet and search for that plugin pack number you just wrote down. Try Google, Simtropolis, and SC4Devotion. Search for both the decimal and hexadecimal versions of the number. (Some sites, such as the "Omnibus" here on Simtropolis, list plugins in hex.)
  5. When you find the missing plugin, download it to your computer.
  6. Run the installer if it has one, or just unzip it and dump its contents directly in your plugins folder if it doesn't have an installer.
  7. Restart SimCity 4.
  8. Re-enter the problem city. The error message should now be gone and the brown-paper packages will become actual things (buildings, train stations, parks, whatever).

That's nearly right but you are missing a step, after

Quote
  1. Write down the number in the error message.
  2. Exit SimCity 4.

you should then do

3. Convert the number you wrote down from Decimal to Hexadecimal

https://www.binaryhexconverter.com/decimal-to-hex-converter

so the number in the first post 50590442 is actually 303F2EA

4. would be look it up in the Omnibus and unfortunately it isn't in the 0x3 index

5. Google for that plugin pack number you just converted; and so on

Good point; I edited my answer to include recommendation to search in both decimal and hex.

Though, in the case of the number the OP gave, I can't find anything. I wonder if the number is correct? A typo would prevent finding it. And after 12 years, who knows if the asking party still lives (his/her last post in Simtropolis was in December of 2007), or if the plugin still exists.
