hello, after a year of being in simtropolis, i think it's time i should begin contributing more and take up batting. i'm thinking about getting 3DS Max because I heard it is much better and easier to use than GMAX, is that true? is there any tutorials i should read to get started? tips, tricks? I really don't know a thing about batting, i do know how to lot edit though 9.gif if anyone out there can explain how they got started and what they need to get started, i would really like to hear your input.

3ds Max is not a free program. It is costs around $4000 I think. If you are a college student i think you can buy it for $200. In other, hand, so many peope are using 3dsmax, are they all rich? I think some of them use a pirated version. but i dunno.

Yeah, getting a pirated version is easy, though I'm not endorsing anything illegal. 5.gif

I believe there are some problems with importing a 3DS Max file into GMAX so it can be exported with the BAT Script, however I could be wrong.

It's a lot cheaper for students. It's a billion times better than gmax, yes.

First, I highly recommend that you start BATing.  I know for a fact that you'd be great at it.  If you started, you would be one of the "greats" of BATing.

3ds Max is a lot better than Gmax, and if you can, it's worth getting.  And plus, not only can you make SC4 buildings with it, you can do anything else too.  A lot of video games and movies are made using 3ds Max.  It is an industry standard.  But that said, many of the greatest BATs were made with Gmax, and are fantastic.  I also think that being a High School student counts for the student discount.

Some time will pass by the time that you get it, install it, and then get BAT4Max working.  In the meantime, download Gmax and the BAT (check out the Mega BAT FAQ at the top of this forum for some info).  You need it to help export BATs when you use 3ds Max anyway, and Gmax is a good place to start learning the basics.  It won't be quite as overwhelming if you start with Gmax.

As for tutorials, I can throw a lot of 3ds Max specific tutorials at you, but they won't mean anything to you until you have the program.  Finding them is as easy as searching google though.

Also, please everyone, no talking about pirating the program.   49.gif

    thank you everyone!

jason: thank you but i wouldn't get my hopes up lol 3.gif my brother works as a major animator at EA and he's working with madden 08, ncaa, and those other sports games so he can probably get me a version of 3ds max, but he's currently going to be in guatemala and i'll be heading off to brazil tomorrow so i won't be able to get it until the end of the month when we see each other again. i downloaded the BAT and gmax and have played a bit with it, i know how to make the simple shapes and what not, i understand the grid, i understand a bit of how night lighting works. so batting is basically putting a bunch of shapes together to make a building right, a bit like drawing correct? i haven't read too many tutorials yet, so that's something i'll be working on soon. i know when i got photoshop i was overwhelmed, but after a year i got the hang of it nicely. anyways, i'll be making a bat thread when i return from brazil so everyone can see my progress and provide constructive critism [because i'll probably need a lot of it lol] 3.gif thanks for your help!

    No, you'll do great!  3.gif

Anyway, have fun in Brazil.  If you can, sit down with your brother and have him show you how to do basic things, it's a lot easier to learn in person than through tutorials on the internet.  You'll have a bit of a head start that way.
