Why more roads...?

Whenever threads are started asking "what's missing from SC4?" or "what should the mod community be working on?", or stuff like that, improvements to the transportation networks always come in high...

The thing is, I don't really understand why... I haven't been playing the game very long, but so far I haven't felt that inadequte transport networks are a particular problem with the game.

Is the principal reason to do with the visual look of the city, that you want to be able to better control how your roads/bridges/etc appear? Or is it that you want to be able to better micro-manage traffic flow...? Or something else altogether??

Thanks for any replies!

People like more variety than the base game provides, whether visual or functional. I like the various street tree and texture mods, and the NAM features. I don't like cities that look and function the same all the time.

One of the reasons is that other areas are relatively easy to add to. All the different building types can be added to with plugins, but the transport systems are much more difficult to add.

The NAM is a great mod, but there are severe limits on what it can do. The new networks it add don't quite work in the same way as the built in ones, and they can also cause the game to crash.

Also, I think the initial transport networks were lacking. There was only one type of passenger train station, only one monorail station, and very severe restrictions on bridges and tunnels.

Wouldn't you like turn lanes for your roads? Roundabouts? Realistic interchanges and wider highways? We at this site do. As vershner stated, a lot of emphasis goes into the transit networks because they are very difficult to make, unlike simply BATing a building or texturing the water.

A very simple reason is that people here look for more and more realism, well, at S

The NAM team continually works on this problem.  The NAM is getting bigger, and may soon be larger than the game, if it is not already.

Game loads at 75MB.  NAM with my selections loads at 13.1MB within the game.
