Awesome airports everyone! I have one suggestion for realism. Any aviation enthusiast will tell you that airport runways are numbered by compass direction. From the pilot's perspective, as you approach the runway from the air, you will see the numbers at the beginning of the runway which indicate direction. Parallel runways are always given a Left / Right designator. ( 9L and 9R or even 9C (center). It may seem like a trivial detail, but I think it defiantly adds to the realism to have them numbered correctly, and makes some of us cringe when it's done incorrectly.

Example: West = 270 degrees, thus a runway facing due west is always runway 27.

W      >>>9L-----------------------27R<<<       E
         >>>9R-----------------------27L<<<

So it's pretty easy to understand which runway should have which number, once you decide which direction is north.

If you are looking for real life airport diagrams, this is a good site.www.airnav.com/airport/KLAX look on the right hand side of the page for a link to "airport diagram" I use this site a lot when I do virtual ATC in Flight Simulator 4.gif It will also give you an idea of how taxiways work and are lettered.

Thank you for your kind words, Larks2242 and urbanterror.

@Jeiman2008: I agree with you. I strive to make my airports (and cities) look realistic, and I've noticed the runway designators provided with the RMIP sets. However, I didn't know what numbers to use, thus I found it best not to use them at all.. But hey, now I know, and I will definately use designators in the future - and update the existing ones. I already have a 2x2 placeholder in each end of all my runways where I planned on placing the designators once I knew which numbers to use.

@CraigKingOfIreland:

Wow..!! Leah Airport looks amazing! It is big, but not oversized. It is beautiful, but not overdone. Fantastic work (as always), I love everything about it! Good idea adding a map of the airport as well.

May I establish a direct route from my humble Redford Airport to Leah..? 2.gif

Btw, I'm still trying to figure out how on earth you've made that sunken terminal next to "Arrivals road" and the GLR..

Another airport from me:

This is the small airport of Carlisle, an island just off the coast of the Victoria and West mainland. The single runway airport serves the only city on the island, City of Carlisle.

Carlisle_Airport_Overview.jpg

The runway is quite short but is operated only by Bombardier CRJs (Northwest and Lufthansa) and Avro RJ85 (WestJet).

Carlisle_Airport_RWY.jpg

The locals were concerned about the costs of the terminal building. When it opened, they found that it was worth every penny.

Carlisle_Airport_Terminal.jpg

That's it. For now. 2.gif

They're made by SOMY. You can find them here (the one that says LNG Set): http://members3.jcom.home.ne.jp/somy000/p9.htm

Be sure to check out the other stuff on that page and the links to other pages P1-P9, there's tons of truly exceptional work.

Now for my update. My airport recently expanded to become the primary hub for Air France, who now has their own terminal, concourses, and cargo area. It houses a large variety of jets for the airlines, including the ATR-42, ATR-72, 747, 747F, 767, 777, A320, A330-200, A340-400, A340-600, A380, and the Concorde. All the planes and the hangar are custom lotted. The airport also serves as a minor hub for Virgin and Emirates, seen on the right of the mosaic. Click for full size (2901x1530 JPG/1.8M).

Thanks for the comments =]

fafalone: Very good, but would be great if there was a little more space between the gates and the taxiways (:

@heitomat The scale of that airport is really good. It reminds me a little of Princess Juliana (TNCM). If it's possible, one thing you might try is extending the taxiways so that they lead onto your displaced thresholds. Those >>>> arrows indicate a place where aircraft may not land, but it's perfectly ok for them to use that area to take off from. Displaced thresholds are used to help with noise levels and in places where the runway may not handle the repeated stress of landing impact.

@Jeiman2008: Thank you, and thanks for the tip as well. I've actually read a little bit about runways and proper construction. The tresholds are indeed ok for taxiing and take-off, and I'm planning on rebuilding the whole stretch of runway (if the locals approve.. 2.gif). However, the main purpose of my little post was to show that I finally could get those designators in place. 9.gif

Jeiman2008: You are right that thresholds can be used for takeoffs, but what Heitomat has used in his pics are "blast pads" which planes cannot use at all.  I think it would look better if the blast pad at the 36 end was replaced with a threshold, it would also make the runway longer for takeoffs. [/ Nerdy aviation talk 21.gif ]

EDIT:  Thinking about it, if you can extend the seawall, you could have a displaced threshold at the 18 end of the runway as well.

Ah yes Jim546 is absolutely right. Those are blast pads. Displaced thresholds have a different marking. My Flight Sim buddies would be laughing at me over that mistake 4.gif

You guys.. 9.gif

Well, over time I've gotten familiar with the RWY pieces. Luckily I have an idea of what you're talking about, and I know that the mentioned pieces exist. I'll give it a go and post the result afterwards.

Btw, should I still have blast pads, even with displaced thresholds?

Heitomat:  I think the blast pads make sense at that airport since one of their jobs is to prevent soil erosion.  Jim was right on, a displaced threshold would probably look best at start of 36.  The blast pad for 18 is perfect.  Oh and I've begun an airport of my own, much inspired by your work.  Putting those peices together right is proving harder than it looks!

Thank you, Larks2242. I wanted to prove that not all airports in this thread have to be huge. 2.gif

It's great that you have started on an airport of your own, Jeiman2008. I'm flattered that you use find my airports inspirational, and I look forward to see an airport with correct markings and will definately use it for reference. I agree about the pieces, though. It's an awful lot of them, and it takes some time to get an overview of them all, not to mention to learn how to place them correctly..

Hey fafalone nice job on the dark textures on the Airbuses. But just make sure the plane is closer to the gate.

@Heitomat: I really like the smallness of the airport. I'm glad you didn't but anything in there bigger than the planes you did. I see some people putting 747s in an airport with microscopic runways- it just looks tacky and unrealistic.

Nice job

But you have to remember everyone is new at some stage; these may be their first airport.

Thank you, Josh6. Still, ROFLyoshi has a good point. Even for those with knowledge of RL airport construction, it can be quite hard to get the grasp of all the pieces and how to use them correctly. I applaud everyone who manage to build a complete custom airport at all. But of course, constructive criticism is (and should always be) allowed.
