suggestion for STEX: tags

I'm not sure if this has been discussed already, but I was thinking that the addition of a tag structure for STEX uploads would really help people find things quickly. Currently, finding something is like pullilng teeth, since so many designers gave their creations a name that has nothing to do with the object (so, if you search for "fence" there are 5 fence items named "parks", you'll never find them). If designers could add tags to each upload, even pre-set ones [house, fence, park, soccer, dirt, rocks, etc], it would make things so much easier to find.

nice idea, but what about the thousands of files already on the exchange? Many of them are old, from people that never show up anymore. How would those be properly tagged?

This is the kind of thing that really works best when implemented at or near the beginning of things. To bad nobody had the idea in 2003...

Aren't they already pre tagged when we select what class of what ever our creations are - step 2 of the upload

Maybe the search engine needs a little tweaking?

that's definitely the tough part. I guess ST could ask for volunteers to start going through everything, maybe one person could take each section? I'd volunteer to spend a couple hours a week to add tags to STEX items.

First, it is necessary to agree to implement this.  Effectively, that is up to dirk and the administrators.

Next, implementation and inclusion in the upload.

Last, review existing content, which should get section tags by default, and decide whether to tag them or archive them.

I believe any lot that does not use rush hour is suspect, and probably eligible for archiving.

    What about modds?

Nono, tas wouldn't work, as they'd be duplicated like a broken machine at Kinko's. A quick-find-code is the way to go. Know the quick-find-code and you're all set.

I like the idea of tags... though you should have the option to search by tag, category, author etc..

    IDS2: Whats that?

IDS2:  Are you thinking of something like a B-tree index?  Could be very effective if we can agree on a key structure and whether partial keys (B*-tree) were allowed.
