Why is the website so slow??

This post quite literality took me over an hour to post, comming back and forth from the game to the page.  I go to post and it loads everything but the box where I type my actually message.  Its been like I have a 56k connection for bout 4 days now and every other page I go to runs just fine.  You moderators got any idea whats up?? Something I can maybe change on my browser?  It is jsut the site in general cuz, I would love to post alot, esp pics but i jsut cant cuz the site is to darn slow   Any suggestions would be great!

yeah posting comments on here is slow for me too. And i've also noticed that cj's load REALLY slow. I don't know about else where though. the stex loads quick though

ST has been incredible slow for me over the past few days as well. Apparently it's so slow that even the dreaded JRun errors don't come up anymore.

Ladies and Gentleman of the jury can we please take a look at the facts.

  1.ST is a "Free" site no membership dues.

 2.Seeing how there is no membership dues the owner(Dirk)pays for this site out of his own pocket and a few donations.

  So in short the members of this need to step up there donations so Dirk can buy better equipment.

 Let us be thankful there is a ST no matter how slow it is or will become.Thanx

@BlackBeard: Most of us already know that. But alot of the members here can't donate for usually 3 reasons...

1. We are too young and our parents wont donate to a fan site.

2. We are low on money and are limiting our spending

or

3. We lack a paypal account.

I can't donate for reason 1. since my parents consider it a silly cause.

I do wish that the Sponsorship program was back.

I find that this site is usually at one of two extemes. When its fast, its fast. When its slow, its slooooow.

I can't make an update in my CJ *Nexis of Genesis* anymore, since I cannot even open it at any time with my slow 56K connection.

The site is dying and being slowly abandonned; like my sig's says, every Empire has an end. One thing I cannot understand though and I consider it as a purely stupid, is that this site won't allow advertising as in many other sites that live for longer and still are thriving. (Civ II for example) If advertising can make the site quicker and available to everyone (just like me) why not have it done so....damn! Wake up, before most of us leave, many have already!

I have given a few hundreds of $ during the last three or four years and I think that I have a right to say that it is time to seriously do something about it. This is one of the greatest ever site of Simcity that existed, why give it up. Lazyness, pride and discouragements don't do good here.

Like I said, I have tried at least 20 times to get into my CJ to make an update for more than two weeks, and I can't even open it, not knowing if someone has posted lately.

Hope this will get back to normal soon and find someone competant who can make it happen. No offense, only a wish that someone will do something about this problem.

Ps. If this works it'll be my *fourth* try to upload this message to this thread

I've noticed that it takes alot to run a SC4 fansite with a exchange (as SC4 devotion knows now) and I have to admit I'm glad for what we have...though we do need some improvement...or a different system. The Chat is the only place on Simtropolis that isn't effected to the same extent except when connecting to it, which is why I'm usually in the chat posting city albums then on the forums posting a CJ...

Most of you are right. The website has no membership fees and is completely free. The City Journals do contain a large portion of the page at view and every little detail in the pictures plus the website layout itself has to load. Don't forget the avatars and the small animations for peoples signatures.

The site is slow because it is free, fairly popular, and not backed by some larger corporate entity, which are all things I love about it. It is arguably the largest Sim City fansite out there, and the numbers shown at the bottom of the page hide the real truth...people that are just browsing, not signed in, and/or just stumbled across this site for the first time and are checking it out. I somehow don't think the Google ads on the left of the page are really cutting it in terms of hardware and software upgrades to keep up with increasing traffic.

And the problem will get worse..think of it...each time someone starts a new CJ...every upload to the STEX...each new rambling pointless post on the forum (like this one)..it all just adds content to the mass, and this content will eventually be accessed and reaccessed over and over again by people wanting to catch up. I think expanding the ads beyond Google sidebars is a great idea if it means greater bandwidth and less bugginess. There need not be a stigma attached to resorting to those methods, because a site like this can't rely on donations alone. So why not do it? Especially if, by this point, people are not returning because of the slowness?

I wonder how the site is going to survive come june/july ? If simtropolis is like any other place then it gets busier during that time of the year right?

Right now its exams time for students in the northern hemisphere, if its crapping out now, I can't imagine how it will function with double the amount of users

hmm yea ive only had one problem that was getting on to the home page but once ive got in i havnt had any problems, no JRUN errors, everythings loading quickly. i can finally have four different threads open at once(that usually freezes my comp.)
