Traffic.. ugh.

I have a medium sized city-- 20K residents, I believe.. but my traffic is atrocious.

I have lots of roads, avenues, streets, highways, et cetera.. but the traffic is just as bad.

All ordinaces are enabled.

None of my sims seem to want to use the subway/elevated rail stations  I had built (usage=0%)

I have NAM installed, and that's it.

Any tips? 15.gif

Your subways probably don't go to and from the right places. How about some maps of your city and subway system>

Also, check to make sure your subways are actually connecting to the blue box in underground view. Many times, I made the stupid mistake of not doing this properly. Or, sometimes the subway line itself was severed by terraforming.

I have the opposite problem...being way over capacity!

You need subway stops at both ends of the trip.  Sims need to get on the subway in a residential area and exit the subway in a comercial or industrial area.  Also it is quite helpful to have a large bus stop system in place.  Make sure that every subway station has a bus stop near it.  This way the sims can get on/off a bus at the subway station and extend their trip.  Any changes you make to your transportation system may take 2 to 5 simyears before you see any improvement.  Be patient and good luck!

Next time I start up the game, I'll post some screenies.. I kind of built the system AROUND my city, as I left it too late to be very efficent with the layout.

They stations are connected. 4.gif There are no bus stops near the stations.

I'm not sure if the stations are near the R/C/I areas.. they're pretty much in random posistions.. I will have a play with it, though.

I suggest building the city around trains, highways, and avenues. Subways are generally expensive, and don't get placed until after a city has developed... the best way of placing them is to a) leave space for subway stations during the construction of the city, and b) do route queries to see where your sims are commuting to/from. Place the subway stations along major routes/destinations, and if possible, try and make the routes shorter (if your city is a grid of roads, lay the subway diagonal to the grid - if the commutes of the sims warrant it.)

also, don't use those crappy 1 tile subway entrances that came with SC4, get the roadtop ones from STEX!! They don't require you to demolish a square.

At the top of the web page click on the ST-Exchange button.  Go to the BAT section.  Careful that your eyes don't pop out as a whole new universe is open to you.6.gif
