Guys, I am looking at all of these amazing CJ's and I see no power plans or garbage zoned in, in every city? Is there a way of abolishing these things? if not, do you guys use bats? Are there any power plants that can cover an entire region? And what do you do about the garbage?

I am getting my new computer soon, and have only just gotten obsessed with SC4, so I can't wait for your answers soon.

Michael

I batted a small square, turned it into a waste to energy facility with max stats, no pollution, no effect on desirablity and hid it under one of Gascookers pubs. Works like a charm.

There are many ways around landfills on the STEX. There is Peg's garbage chute and garbage dock, Simgoober's waste to energy building, and my Black hole waste management lots. Most of them give power as well. The other way is to use neighborhood connections and have a dirty city provide power and landfill. Most people will not show these cities in their CJ even if it is there because they are not pretty cities.

Oh but I love industrial parks. Dirty, clean, it's all realistic right? Thanks so much guys. I always intended on having a city or two dedicated to industrial/garbage stuff.

ILL Tonkso, could you PM me that BAT? Pretty please?

And one more thing guys, these waste to energy plants, only need to be built one right? I wouldn't need one in every city?

I go for a more realistic effect in my cities, so I usually have a city tile or two that's pretty much industrial parks with some slums, and they have areas for landfill and power.

Occasionally I will temporarily use Peg's garbage chute in my non-industrial cities until I can get one done.

In every city in my CJ region you will find garbage Lots - be it landfill, recycling centers or WTE. Sometimes I hide them, sometimes not. Sometimes I Show them, sometimes not - it just depends ...

If some CJers don't show them, well, ?t is their decision. But unless you don't play only paused you'll need them ...

In my cities I try to build some recycle centers to reduce the ammount of garbage. The rest is shipped. 19.gif

Lots doing this are waiting for download on the STEX.

Ok, sometimes I use the excellent waste to energy plant of simgoober.

    Also available here...

If you look in the STEX, you'll find great things to "escape" those ugly landfills. I'm using the black-hole management lot, but I think I'll change it and use something more realistic. Be careful, if you are anti-cheater because most of the garbage lots are different types of cheats!

gshmails - I like your Black Hole Waste Management lots.  I use them in my Power/Garbage city to take care of my regional need.  They work great and look quite nice next to my Hydrogen Power stations.

In my CJ there are quite a few pictures where the power plant is visible and the landfill is visible... I don't try to hide it, I think they are parts of the city and deserve to be shown and not cheated. 3.gif (you should see the rest of my cities, coughcoughfightthepowercheatcough 3.gif)

SO my next question is, do I need one in every city? And if not, If I can have them in one or two city tiles, do the other cities recognise this and shift all of their garbage there?

Hmmm, good question. I'll try and tell you. Until now I thought that I could export garbage into a lot and not in the landfill...

If your city is fairly large you will probably need several of them.  I usually tuck them away in pairs in one or two of the corners away from any residential area.

Thanks guys. I think I'll be using a few of those black holes. Hee. Great creation!

Also if anyone can point me to a huge power plant that can provide power for a lot of the city grids in a region, I'll be very happy! 4.gif

There is already a waste to energy plant included in SimCity4, and you can use it to destroy up to 500 units of garbage (correct?). If you pull the funding all the way down, you don't have to pay for it. This technique is included in the "Making Money the Easy Way" tutorial found on the Omnibus. A variation on this technique could be used for a large region, having several dozen of these plants with full funding and selling the energy off to your neighboring cities, thus taking care of garbage and energy in one fell swoop. I don't have a region developed enough to test this theory out. Also, recycling centers and the trash ordinance(s) will help reduce overall garbage production.

As far as the lots on the STEX, I personally consider them "cheating." I suppose they are nice as they completely eliminate the need for a landfill or any other waste management, but as DFire870 pointed out, this takes a very realistic aspect of the game and eliminates it. If you have no problems with the numerous "cheating" lots out there, then go ahead and download one. Actually, the black hole option is on the edge of science fiction, but it at least is somewhat feasible. (Why not have our garbage melted by magma?) It would however, produce toxic smoke, but I'm sure the people at Black Hole Industries have already figured out how to eliminate that from happening. 4.gif

For larger cities I have about 4, each one with a few WTE. Than again, I don't use any of these fancy downloads that make garbage go *poof* (Although they are impressive and it is very tempting... So... Very tempting...)

There is a new industry in the real world (outside SC4) that uses plasma energy to vaporize garbage, which produces energy as well obsidian glass which can be used in many different products as well as producing hydrogen and carbon monoxide that can be converted into a variety of marketable fuels, including ethanol, natural gas and hydrogen. The company to produce this garbage solution is Startech, this was recently reported in a popular science article.

So getting back to SC4, this is a non cheating actual method used in real life that can be applied to SC4. Its clean, can eliminate large amounts of garbage, produces power, and gases for different uses. If this was a bat file on stex, I would use it, and not consider it cheating.

Does anyone get an idea, to make all of these futuristic stuff accessible after certain year of game time?

I am, for the most part, a realist, and for a long time I stayed far away from so-called "cheaty" lots like the black holes, etc. But once my region got big enough that having landfills in every city tile was problematic and I tried to create one big, region-wide landfill, (which I happen to think is pretty REALISTIC...) I found that neighbor deals for waste were VERY unpredictable and frustrating. Not only that, but trying to resize landfills, especially on hills, leads to some UGLY and irritating results.

So, now I'm cheaty, and I'm okay with that. As long as it all goes SOMEWHERE, I don't feel to bad about it.

I actually like landfills. But I'm obsessed with urban renewal in my cities. I purposefully build slummy, crime-ridden, run-down, disorganized, industrial cities in order to clean them up later. They look so much better when built, and then re-built than pre-planned park-filled, perfect avenue cities that have no problems (which I get too bored with to bother building). Landfills are apart of that urban renewal. I know in Albuquerque, NM, the vast majority of the Northeast Heights were built on the former city landfill (by the way, its the second wealthiest place in the city now, only 20 years after the landfill recovery... and probably the most pleasant!) I try to do the same thing. I build one landfill out in "no-where" (where I know the city will grow to eventually, but I figure city councils at the time of construction don't plan on it... I often do things based on if a city council, mired by bought-out politicos and poor future planning, were doing it), and once the city's suburbs start to graze the area, I start trying to recover the land by placing new landfills next-door, or more remote places of the city's tile, convert the garbage to energy, anything to try and recover the landfill's property.

I like tasks like that, and I set myself up for them.

I don't use any cheats/modds to get rid of garbage. I have at least 1 recycling center per city (my main cities have up to 4 recycling centers). The recycling center gives me my trash presort ordinance and it saves maybe 20-25% of the garbage in each city.

Then, I always build 1 small city square and then the square becomes my "energy council" for the whole region. From city to city, garbage is sent into the council, then my waste-to-energy plants makes lots of energy. This energy is sold to the whole region and deals are made, same type of deals as garbage. All the cities are making chain-deals to the council.

Of course, only the island cities need their landfill squares and their power.

I play the game "out of the box".

I have no problem managing the garbage the sims make using the trash ordinance, recycling center, and waste to energy building (most of the time, a couple of each.) I tend to put the recycling and waste to energy plant in the industrial sector(s) of my cities - and all cities I make have one of those (though, later in the game, they tend to be the I$$ and I$$$, with no I$; mind you, I put in a lot of farms first, so the R$ probabably work at the farmers before getting an education.)

Anyhow - it's realistic. I live in Japan. I'm sure there are landfills here, but I've never seen one, and I doubt any of the garbage I make goes to a landfill, as... lessee, there's two types of garbage: burnable and recycleable. Burnable is self explanatory (there's a waste to energy plant somewhere nearby). Recycleable is broken down into subcategories, picked up on different days (plastic, glass, metal, household items (sofa, fridge, etc.,) etc..

I don't support the 1x1 do-it-all lots. Why? They're unrealistic. The same with some on-the-horizon future tech solution. Does the city that you live in have the means to create such a facility?

Nevetheless, it's you're game, and you're free to do whatever you want with it. If a black-hole solution is what makes your game fun, or an ever growing garbage pile, then use it. If you've read this far, thank you.

@Sketchley Landfills would be a problem in Japan, considering what a premium space is at.

Is it possible to reduce the amount of garbage in the landfills and recover the land?

To all of you guys out there having problems with trash and power. I have downloaded one item that has gotten rid of all these problems. An air filter, you could call it cheating but I feel it isn't. All it does is clean air surrounding it here is a link to it https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/files/file/26857-air-filter-1x1-round/. I place 1 near each waste incinerator and poof. The garbage is turned into power, the air filter takes care of the pollution and allows industrial areas as well to be built. This is somewhat futuristic but works very well.
