I'm not terribly active on this site as of recent days and look what I miss. It becomes teribly confusing, most expecially when you've become dependent on one's avatar to know who posted what when skimming through a topic quickly.

It would be even more interesting if people swapped their signatures while they were at it (especially after reading marc's comment) - it would baffle people even more.

I think the stealing of random avatars just makes it the more interesting. Then it's not specifically a two-way swap, and there's the possibility of multiple people with one avatar.
