with the new NAM, there are new lots which have rail under road connections, and then other lots to bring the rail back to the surface. why not do this with highways?

It could be because the NAM lots are Road/Rail dual networking, while a highway/road piece would still be Road/Road traffic.

I don't think they would be able to tell which traffic is on the road and which traffic is on the highway.

The main problem would be if your underground highway goes under any roads/streets/avenues. The game would treat that as a regular intersection, making the underground highway pointless.

Well, actually, from the experimentation I've done, it appears that it is entirely possible.  I've recently started initial work on a collaboration with blahdy (of Big Dig fame) which will involve taking the RHW underground.

A puzzle piece (or even a manually-pathed Transit-Enabled Lot) where a ground-level Road crosses an underground RHW will actually behave exactly the same as an elevated Road over an RHW, not a ground level intersection.  There's a height differential built into the pathing files, so that traffic from the underground roadway won't turn onto the ground roadway at the puzzle piece, and vice-versa.

So yes, it is possible . . .  and there's a good possibility you'll be seeing it soon . . .

hi!

Im looking for a away to get underground highway intersections to underground, is it possible in any way? It would be great if two crossing underground highways could mix the traffic in the location those meet in underground. Maxis haven't really done nothing to the tunnel tool of SC since SC2..

I have this in my city and I would like to get it underground:

and I have this in my city, which would be good to see underground some day too:

Could it be done without turning the traffic into subway?

thanks for commenting siso43 4.gif

the usage of underground tunnel depends on the placement of tunnels and entrances/exists. when city's get big enough and traffic gets nightmare, many times only option is to upgrade avenues to highways. I rely much on public transport and im sure not gonna drag anymore highways, and especially not into my downtown, but highway tunnels are more than welcome to burst all the traffic to my commercial areas! 4.gif

Simple, why don't you use the Big Dig pack that is on the STEX, you connect the highways to the at-ground level of the transition and a subway tunnel to the underground end, just make sure you don't connect these tunnels to any of your rail subway lines.

Other people have tried convincing sebastin of that, but he insists on not using it since it would mess up his subway system, although there are ways to make it work.

Actually, there IS a way. All you have to do is cover the offending interchange with a prop or something. 3.gif Try it out, it'll work.
