Starting New Regions

This is sort of an add-on to my last topic, but not really, so I figured it needed its own thread.  When a region is started, are the city tiles all random or is there a set pattern that all regions have when they are first started? Are all the large tiles in the same place, or are they different every time? Thanks

I read the "config.bmp: How to make it Yours. It  makes sence, but I still don't know where to go to actually make a region. All large squares would be great.

More or less the whole Omnibus article in a nutshell:

Step 1: Make a new region. It can't have any cities in it or this whole process will be screwed up.

Step 2: Erase your config.bmp file. Don't delete it, I mean edit it in Paint and plow it all over with white. (You can zoom in if you like, too 2.gif )

Step 3: Mix and match! As long as nothing overlaps, any combination is possible. Large city tiles are 4x4 pixels of blue (RGB 0,0,255 [it has to be this or it won't work]), medium tiles are 2x2 pixels of green (RGB 0,255,0 [also has to be exact]), and small tiles are one pixel of red (RGB 255,0,0 [you get the point now]). Again, if nothing overlaps, it will work perfectly.

With some creativity, you can make it turn out like this:

configrw1.png

or like this:

configth7.png

Have fun! 9.gif

Ok I have been really having a hard time with importing a custom region by both editing the already created BMP files in the respective region folders and I have no clue how to make a custom region from scratch using paint. I basically want a simple region with all large city maps so i guess 16 large cities like this format where L = Large city,

LLLL

LLLL

LLLL

LLLL

I do not want it to be a strip but the same region build as say the already prebuilt cities like new york, london and so forth. Using paint how would I do this. I have read all the threads on making custom maps from STomnibus's post to vandys post to the post that goes over USGS data maps with greyscale and I do not understand the whole importing maps from grayscale to make them a colored BMP, sorry I am a ***** at this 15.gif. I just simply want a region that has all large cities. I have done the following and it has not worked for me. I opened up SC4 DE and created my new region naming it Texas. I then went into paint and made my size 16x16 pixels and colored in the little sqaure all blue as blue represents large cities. Then i save the file as Texas.BMP and put it into my Texas folder. I then go back to Sim City 4 DE and hit Cntrl-Shift-alt + R and it pulls up the file menu for me to chooes my Texas.BMP which I do and then nothing happens i do not get a rendering screen or anything. I use to play this game 3 years ago and stopped and just started playing again and I made custom regions fine back then but have seem to have forgotten how. Please help me out guys. Thanks a ton.

You're almost there clocknane - just a couple of crossed wires 4.gif

From what you've described, go to your Texas.bmp and rename it "config.bmp". It must be called this, otherwise it won't work. Keep it in your Texas folder. The bmp itself sounds ok - 16x16 all blue should get you 4x4 large cities.

Then go into SimCity, and open your Texas region. You should see a totally flat region, with 4x4 large cities. That's your region created.

If you want to then import some terrain from a grayscale jpg (lots of them on the STEX), you would need to find/make a 1025x1025 pixel grayscale jpg, and then import that using Ctrl+Alt+Shft+R. Be warned - rendering takes a while!

Ok thanks alot Joe 90 I got the BMP image to work and now have 4x4 large cities. Oddly enough, I used Microdem and the USGS Data to create my customer terrain layout and that to me for some reason was easier then the whole BMP imaging. I have no idea why. Nonetheless, I am learning to incorporate new terrains and new region layouts now so thats a good thing. Thanks for the help. I figured i was doing something simple wrong like naming the config file wrong hehe.

Hi, I tried it too, it was really easy! I created a new region called Los Angeles, opened it up in paint, made all the squares (or pixels or whatever) blue, saved and there it was! 4.gif Happiest SimCity day of my life 9.gif
