@JGENEAU: It is unnecessary to post too many for a small post like that. I recommend you to use edit button and merge all your posts.

My city layout style models that of Los Angeles (at least that's what I'm going for). Basically it's an expansive, car-based layout that uses low residential, low commercial except for a small pocket of dense commercial in the city center. I use region play, so this is just an excerpt. I have recreated my city center, and how the traffic flows.

cons:

  • heavy traffic (can be helped out with mass transit)
  • lots of land usage (low residential expands otuwards and outwards)
  • lots of neighbor connections required for energy, trash, etc.
pros:

  • industrial / residential seperated for pollution control
  • predictable traffic flow, also controllable through highways
  • low density means flexibilty for building projects

I usually start out with a grid. Then it sorta gets non-gridlike...

Pros- it looks sorta realistic

Cons- the traffic is HORRIBLE...

When I develope my cities, I typically have no town center. That said, I still have commercial districts that are relativly easy to get to. I am experimenting with a new idea (at least for me) where I develope residential as normal, and when I add avenues I add all commercial on either side (think commercial strips), making jobs easier to locate, access, and rezone when the time comes for higher density sites.

In urban areas, I tend to use rectangular (4x-8-12 tiles) blocks, ala NYC or SF. Looking at it from a "manhattan perspective", I make the "street" sides of the block primarily residential, and the "avenue" sires primarily commercial, obviously with some variation. This allows for the wider avenues to have RTMT stations or el-over-road since it's mostly commercial. It's also easy to place squares and parks to break up the grid a bit. Keeping the commercial and res mixed up like that at least kindof makes up for the fact that SC4 lacks mixed use zones, it lets more folks walk to work and transit.
